Duke / Fuqua MBA Admissions Interview Questions: Round 2 / On Campus / Second-year Student

My interview was on February 25th after a “Fuqua Friday” event on campus the prior night. It was a great opportunity to mingle with Fuquans and other prospectives. Interviewees who attended the event seemed more at ease the next morning than others who showed up just for their interview. It helped me appreciate the laid back atmosphere which is a huge selling point for Fuqua that the students try very hard to maintain.

The on-campus interview is with a trained second year student. Interviewers are assigned at random and have only your resume. Dress is business casual although about 30-40 percent of interviewees came in business formal. Dress seemed less important as long you looked and felt comfortable. My interview flowed more like a conversation which the interviewer kicked off by sharing his undergrad/professional background. The entire interview lasted about 50 minutes after we started a few minutes late. While in the waiting area I noticed several interviewers wandering around calling out prospectives’ names (apparently there were several no-shows). During my interview we covered five questions directly:

  • Why MBA?
  • Why Fuqua?
  • When you dealt with a difficult team member.
  • Something you’d like to improve upon.
  • Contribution to Fuqua.

My interviewer referenced items on my resume which were worked into the conversation, so my challenge was covering all the bases and hitting my points. He transitioned into the last 15 minutes by offering a chance to share anything that wasn’t already mentioned in my application, then offering to answer questions.
