I applied R1 and had my interview earlier this week. I arrived at the admissions office 15 minutes early. There’s a coat closet where you can hang up your coat and store any small bags you may have brought with you. Similar to last year’s reports, after I checked in I received an NYU Stern t-shirt and a folder tailored to areas of my interest (i.e. Stern Women in Business fact sheet, etc). My interviewer came out to greet me right on time and we chatted as we walked towards her office. It was a pretty friendly conversation and the interviewer was extremely encouraging (but that doesn’t mean I wasn’t still nervous!). It was clear that she had read my essays and resume beforehand as a lot of questions were tailored to my experiences and I was not asked questions on items that I had already addressed in my essays. Here are my questions:
1. Fun/light question regarding an interest noted in my creative essay
2. How I made the transition from my old job (big 4 accounting) to my current role (marketing)?
3. Compare and contrast my current role to the role I hope to have post graduation – 1 comparison and 1 difference.
4. How I plan to market myself in my target industry?
5. Where do I see my internship next summer and what are my short term goals (list specific companies)?
6. What if I don’t get it or the role is not what I expected – what’s my backup plan?
7. What frustrates me the most at my current role?
8. How would my friends describe me. give 2-3 traits?
9. Given the movements in the market / businesses this year and my interest in strategy, what would I have changed or done differently strategy wise for a company? (I can’t seem to reconstruct the question 100% but this is something along the lines of the question. It was definitely a bit of an unexpected question for me, but I picked a recent company’s botched bankruptcy and discussed that.)
10. What role would I prefer to take (if any) in a student organization? I was given 3 leadership roles to choose from and I selected one and listed my reasons why.
11. What makes me want to go to Stern again (I went for undergrad) why does it stand out?
12. Questions for the interviewer.
The interview lasted for 30 minutes. I was told to expect a decision (via email notification) within 2-3 weeks, but was pleasantly surprised to receive an update 4 days later – admitted!
