Matan Gabay, Kellogg MBA Class of 2021
Age: 29
Hometown: Tel Aviv, Israel
Undergraduate Institution and Major: Economics and Management, Open University of Israel
Pre-MBA Work Experience (years, industry): 2 years in consulting (Strategy), 2.5 years in a private tech defense systems company, and 7 years in the Israeli Air-Force as a Drone Pilot.
Why business school? Why now?
I loved my previous job in consulting, which helped me grow and utilize a lot of very important skills. It also helped me to understand that in my next challenge I would like to make an impact from the company side. I think that right now, business school can help foster some of those missing skills like management and entrepreneurship, that will help me to make a real impact on any organization whether working for a big company or opening my own venture.
Why Kellogg? What factors figured most prominently into your decision of where to attend?
First, I looked for a school that puts a strong emphasis on sectors such as leadership, innovation, teamwork, product management, and entrepreneurship. Kellogg is an amazing choice for all these reasons.
Secondly, I wanted a top school that brings the best recruiters and opens a wide variety of job opportunities, especially in tech.
Lastly, it was important to me to find a school that would allow me to feel natural in its culture and fit my personality. While most of the top business schools have pretty similar offerings, it is important to choose the one that will give you the best opportunity to develop but also have fun! (P.S if you can, go visit the school!)
What do you think is your most valuable or differentiating contribution to the Class of 2021?
I bring a wide variety of leadership experiences and an efficient, straightforward attitude from my time as a major in the Israeli Air Force and my roles in tech and consulting industries. Additionally, I hope that coming from a different culture will bring value to my class.
Fun fact that didn’t get included on your application?
I once crashed a pretty big and very expensive drone into a tree (it became funny only a few years later).
Post-MBA career interests?
While serving in the Israeli Air Force as a drone pilot, I was exposed to some amazing technologies. I remain passionate about technology and my goal after school is to be part of an inspiring company that shapes the future through innovative applications of drones, autonomous transportation, or similar cutting-edge technology.
Advice to current prospective applicants:
–One thing you would absolutely do again as part of your application process?
Thinking about how to approach the essay topics wasn’t an easy task, and it took deep thinking about my past experiences. My advice would be to talk with your friends, colleagues, past managers and you will be surprised how much you learn about yourself.
Sometimes the stories that seem the most ordinary are much more appreciated than you think. Also, pressing the submit button was super satisfying!
–One thing you would change or do differently?
Start the online application as early as you can and don’t underestimate how long it will take you! It takes more time and thoughtfulness than some may expect.
–Part you would have skipped if you could—and what helped you get through it?
The video part of the application was nerve-racking for me. You have one shot, about 60 seconds, and you have no idea what the interviewer will ask. Preparation definitely helped! I did some mock-ups with random questions and learned how to become better on each try.
What is your initial impression of Kellogg’s students/culture/community?
You can feel the strong community culture before the program even starts. From clubs, student meetings, Day at Kellogg (DAK – admitted students weekend) and KWEST (Kellogg Worldwide Exploration Student Trips), there are endless opportunities to bond with your classmates, and learn more about yourself.
When I came to DAK I could feel the unique community culture from the first moment being surrounded by professors, faculty members, and students that are proud to be part of the Kellogg community. I remember hearing Kellyn Smith Kenny, Hilton CMO, and Kellogg alumna, talk to students about how Kellogg helped her to shape her career and lead such a remarkable organization, I know that is a common theme for most who have spent time at Kellogg.
One thing you have learned about Kellogg that has surprised you?
It was amazing to learn about Kellogg’s endless opportunities for support. From the alumni network offering opportunities to network and socialize through clubs and classes, to resources that the Career Management Center offers like interview prep and one on one coaching. Kellogg’s faculty members, alumni, mentors, and 2nd-year students are constantly actively approaching you just to offer a helping hand, and I think that it tells a lot about the culture at Kellogg.
Thing you are most anxious about in your first year?
Kellogg has so much to offer but having to quickly decide the direction and industry of your internship experience is nerve racking. The ‘fear of missing out’ definitely makes me anxious.
Thing you are most excited about in your first year?
I actually can’t wait to meet my classmates, that is one of the main reasons I came to business school. Kellogg brings together so many diverse and talented people from all over the world – meeting them will be very interesting and exciting.
