I interviewed on a Friday, which was a little bit odd considering there are no classes on Fridays. This meant that there was less activity and buzz within the school, but overall I still had a really positive experience.
My interview was a blind interview with an adcom member. It lasted about 45 minutes and was very conversational. My interviewer was super nice and chatty, which broke the ice immediately. First, she asked me to walk her through my resume. She stopped to ask a few follow-up questions throughout. We then moved onto talk about “why MBA, why now, why Kenan-Flagler” questions. She did ask a few questions I’ve never received before:
1) You’ve clearly accomplished a lot in your career, what do you think has caused you to be so driven?
2) What do you think you’ll miss about your current job?
The second question definitely threw me, trying to answer in a way that doesn’t make it seem like I’m unsure of my move to pursue an MBA, but also trying to highlight the unique perspective I bring from my current role.
Overall, the interview was a great experience. Out of all the interviews I’ve had, I think this was truly the most conversational. The interviewer clearly had a few key questions she wanted to ask me, but took her time and really seemed to want to get to know me throughout the process. In the end, I was accepted!
My advice is pretty basic. Know your story and you’ll do great. Take the opportunity to highlight stories or skills that may not have come through in your application. Be yourself because it really, truly seemed like they were trying to find a good cultural fit more than anything.
