Why business school? Why now?
I wanted to expand my network, gain a global understanding of business, and develop fundamental skills to be a successful leader. Having considered an MBA for a while, I decided that it was the right time, as I had the practical business experience to contribute to the course discussions and could apply the knowledge gained from an MBA in my future career.
Why HEC? What factors figured most prominently into your decision of where to attend?
I wanted a program with a reputation for excellence, a strong sense of community, a diverse student body, and strong career placement. HEC has a strong reputation, and the alumni and current students are proud to be a part of the community. Living on campus with my classmates has been a great experience that has allowed me to get to know everyone outside of the classroom setting. I have also been able to benefit from various career-related activities including workshops and speakers.
What do you think is your most valuable or differentiating contribution to the Class of 2022?
Every student has a different background and work experience. I believe my work experience and background contribute to this diversity. I have always loved meeting new people and getting involved, so I am looking forward to participating with clubs on campus and applying my marketing and project management skills.
Fun fact that didn’t get included on your application?
I started skiing when I was 18 months old.
Post-MBA career interests?
I am passionate about marketing and technology as well as consumer products and would like to work in a role that combines some aspect of those fields after my MBA.
Advice to current prospective applicants:
–One thing you would absolutely do again as part of your application process?
When I looked for an MBA program that was right for me, I reached out to current students and alumni. This was extremely helpful and allowed me to get a first-hand view of each program, which made the decision process easier.
–One thing you would change or do differently?
I would have liked to have been able to visit campus and attend a prospective student day.
–Part you would have skipped if you could—and what helped you get through it?
I would have skipped the GMAT. Initially, I was nervous to take it and wanted to keep studying so I kept putting off registering until I felt completely ready. Some of the best advice I got was to register for a date to have a fixed deadline.
What is your initial impression of HEC’s students/culture/community?
My initial impressions have been very positive, and I am very happy with my decision. The professors and administrators have been extremely helpful, especially with the uncertainty surrounding Covid-19. Our professors have tried to make the learning experience as engaging and interactive as possible. I have been impressed by the quality of teaching and the accomplishments of our professors; they have written numerous recognized articles and books and stay up to date with current trends.
I also have been impressed by all of my classmates and the culture at HEC. My classmates are ambitious and hard-working, but also extremely friendly, inclusive, and helpful. They all are active and eager to get to know one another, taking the initiative to plan activities for everyone, from daily lunches, walks, or trips to the supermarket, to excursions to museums and restaurants, tours, and weekend trips. I have especially enjoyed how excited everyone is to share their favorite foods, including a French breakfast, a Lebanese lunch, a Chinese hot pot dinner, and an American barbeque.
One thing you have learned about HEC that has surprised you?
I was surprised by the lake on campus. It is really nice to be able to go for a walk through the trails or sit by the lake and watch the swans.
Thing you are most anxious about in your first year?
With a limited background in finance, I was worried about the finance-related courses. However, our class representatives organized a comprehensive tutoring program for all subjects. I have been really impressed by the importance the tutors have placed on helping us review the material and their patience in explaining new concepts.
Thing you are most excited about in your first year?
I have really enjoyed my experience with The Executive Committee, TEC, thus far. The program is a personal and professional mentoring program of two groups of twelve students that meets once a month to hear from different speakers and discuss various topics. I have found it to be an invaluable way to reflect on my personal and professional goals in an open and trusting environment. Hearing others in the group share their experiences and offer insightful and respectful feedback has provided a unique opportunity to think not only about my professional life but also about my definition of success and how it relates to my professional and personal life.
