Chika Okafor, Georgetown McDonough MBA Class of 2024
Age: 32
Hometown: Chicago
Undergraduate Institution and Major: University of Chicago, Psychology
Pre-MBA Work Experience (years, industry): 10 years – Sports, media & entertainment
Why did you make the decision to attend business school? Why now?
My decision was driven, in part, by changes in the sports and media industry caused by advancements in technology. The way consumers engage and connect with sports, brands, and personalities has changed a lot since I entered the media industry in 2012 and I felt that I didn’t have the skills and the experience to excel in the future in the way that I wanted to. I see business school as an incredible opportunity to develop the skills, knowledge, and network to thrive in a predominantly digital environment and to impact organizations on a much larger scale.
Why did you choose Georgetown McDonough? What factors figured most prominently into your decision of where to attend?
The three most important factors were Georgetown McDonough’s strong brand and reputation in the business community, the good fortune of receiving a full-tuition scholarship, and the fact that my wife, then fiancee, was already living in Washington, D.C.
What do you think is your most valuable or differentiating contribution to the Class of 2024?
I bring a unique perspective on the challenges of having a career that is closely tied to your passion. I pursued a career in sports media because it provided an opportunity to stay close to my passion, sports. While it can be rewarding, working in sports has changed my relationship with sports over time.
Tell us a fun fact about yourself that didn’t get included on your application:
Thanks to working in sports, media and entertainment, I have been able to fulfill childhood dreams such as attending the NBA Finals, the NFL Draft, March Madness Final Four, the College Football Semifinals, and the ESPYs and have worked closely with athletes and entertainers such as Todd Gurley, John Wall, rapper Wale, and 5x Grammy Award winner Lil’ Wayne.
Post-MBA career interests:
Consulting, technology, ESG/sustainability, sports, media, & entertainment
Advice for Current Prospective Applicants:
–What is one thing you would absolutely do again as part of your application process?
I would absolutely work with an admissions consultant again. The support and guidance throughout the process were invaluable. The consultant had a keen sense of what schools looked for in prospective students. As a result, I felt confident in the selection of the experiences and accomplishments that I highlighted in my essays.
–What is one thing you would change or do differently?
If possible, I strongly recommend that candidates start the application process at least a year before their targeted application deadline. Writing essays and studying for entrance exams is a time-consuming and grueling process. So, the extra time will provide ample opportunity to study and prepare your application materials without feeling overwhelmed.
–What is one part you would have skipped if you could—and what helped you get through it?
Studying for the GMAT was a grind. The process tested my confidence and resolve on several occasions. However, by keeping the bigger picture in mind (why I wanted to go to business school), I was able to work through the difficult times.
What is your initial impression of the McDonough students/culture/community?
The culture is truly one of collaboration both in and out of the classroom. Despite the fact that many of us are competing for the same jobs, I still see a strong desire to help each other by sharing information and resources.
What is one thing you are most anxious about in your first year?
Time. Do I have enough time to develop the skills required for the opportunities I seek? Time will tell (pun intended) but I’m going to do everything that I can to ensure that I am ready when the right opportunity comes around.
What is one thing you are most excited about in your first year?
I am excited about the amazing opportunities for personal and professional development. As someone from a non-traditional background, I think I have a lot to gain by going through this process. I am learning every day and I’m excited about how the experience will set me up for success in the long term.
