Kelly Alejos Carrion, Rochester Simon Business School MBA Class of 2026

 Age: 27
 Hometown: Lima, Peru
Undergraduate Institution and Major: Industrial Engineering at University of Lima
Pre-MBA Work Experience: I spent two years as a business analyst at Marsh McLennan, followed by two years as a risk analyst at a leading bank in Peru. After that, I transitioned to the tech industry, where I’ve spent the past three years in data analytics and operations working across sectors like food delivery, edtech, and fintech.

Why did you make the decision to attend business school? Why now?
I have always dreamed of pursuing an MBA in the United States to deepen my understanding of business, enhance my leadership skills, and advance my career into management positions in the medium term. After hearing the experiences of close friends regarding their MBA journeys, I realized it was time to stop postponing my goals and understood that this is the right moment for me to embark on this transformative path.

Why did you choose Rochester Simon? What factors figured most prominently into your decision of where to attend?
I chose Simon because it offers a quantitative curriculum that aligns perfectly with my interests and background. The small class size fosters meaningful connections with classmates, allowing for deeper interactions and collaboration. Additionally, the high percentage of international students reflects Simon’s commitment to diversity, enriching the learning experience and broadening perspectives in the classroom. Ultimately, I felt a genuine sense of care from the administration throughout my application process, which reinforced my decision to join this community.

What do you think is your most valuable or differentiating contribution to the Class of 2026?
My most valuable contribution to the Class of 2026 is my ability to execute high quality projects with meticulous attention to detail. I am passionate about data analytics and leverage it to inform decision making. My extensive experience across various industries, including insurance, banking, technology, and nonprofits, allows me to bring unique insights and diverse perspectives to class discussions and group projects.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself that didn’t get included on your application:
I started a sock business during the COVID-19 pandemic, which gave me some insight into the textile industry and entrepreneurship.

Post-MBA career interests:
I aim to continue my career in strategy and operations within a technology company, as well as work in strategic consulting. I am eager to apply my analytical knowledge and leadership skills in these roles, driving impactful initiatives that contribute to organizational success.

Advice for Current Prospective Applicants:
–What is one thing you would absolutely do again as part of your application process?
I would connect with first-year and second-year students or alumni from Simon to learn about their experiences, including the courses they took, internships, full-time offers, clubs, life in Rochester, budgeting, and more. This guidance helped me make an informed decision about investing in my MBA at Simon.

–What is one thing you would change or do differently?
I wish I had started my research much earlier and learned about pre-MBA events that provide opportunities to connect with the university and the admissions team, as well as current students to gain insights into their experiences.

–What is one part you would have skipped if you could—and what helped you get through it?
If I could have skipped one part, it would be the uncertainty about whether pursuing an MBA is a worthwhile investment. However, I’ve found immense value in learning from the experiences of those who have completed their MBAs and are now well-positioned in the job market. Their insights and success stories have reassured me that this investment is not only valuable but essential for my professional growth.

What is your initial impression of the Rochester Simon MBA students/culture/community?
My initial impression of the Simon community is very positive! It is a close-knit community, which I greatly admire. Everyone is willing to lend a helping hand, especially considering the challenges of leaving one’s home country for this transformative experience. There are numerous events both on campus and in the city that provide opportunities to create new memories and have fun.

What is one thing you have learned about Simon that has surprised you?
I have been pleasantly surprised by the variety of events available to us, from yoga classes and volunteer opportunities to happy hours, hiking, beach events, canoeing, dance classes, and more. There isn’t a week that goes by without something exciting to do. It’s one of the best aspects of being here!

What is one thing you are most anxious about in your first year?
I feel a bit anxious about the language barrier since this is my first time living outside of Latin America for an extended period, and I’m pursuing an MBA in English. However, I have adapted quickly, learning a lot, and performing well in my classes. Building friendships has been essential, and my peers have supported me throughout this journey, making me feel at home. Additionally, there are English conversation sessions specifically for international students.

What is one thing you are most excited about in your first year?
I am thrilled to be back in classes after seven years! Learning from amazing professors and collaborating with my classmates has been invigorating. Currently, my study group is fantastic; we complement each other perfectly and support one another in our studies and in searching for internships for the following year.
