Why did you make the decision to attend business school? Why now?
Upon leaving the military last year, I reflected on my career and the strong leadership skills I had developed. However, I soon realized that to successfully pivot to investment banking, I needed to enhance my business acumen. An MBA program presented the perfect opportunity to boost these skills.

Why did you choose Carnegie Mellon Tepper? What factors figured most prominently into your decision of where to attend?
I did a lot of research to find the right MBA program, and Carnegie Mellon, the Tepper School of business checked many of my boxes. It offers a strong leadership development program, a focus on quantitative skills, and impressive graduate placement rates. However, even after being accepted, I was still unsure. I had several other offers, each with its own strengths and weaknesses.

Everything changed during Welcome Weekend. I went in with low expectations about being closer to committing to a program, but by the end of those two days, I felt that I had found my home for the next two years.  While rankings and statistics can guide your choice, I realized that the most important factor was how I felt when I walked through the door. Along with the Tepper School’s excellent academic and professional programs, it was the genuine excitement of current students and the strong sense of belonging that ultimately convinced me to choose the Tepper School.

What do you think is your most valuable or differentiating contribution to the CMU Tepper Class of 2026?
Having served in the U.S. Navy where I led and collaborated with highly diverse teams, I bring a unique perspective to the Class of 2026. I am excited to contribute my skills in fostering teamwork and inclusivity, drawing on my experiences to support and connect with my classmates from all over the world and various industries.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself that didn’t get included on your CMU Tepper Class of 2026 application:
This past summer, I spent a month traveling solo. I started my journey with the world’s longest non-stop flight from New York City to Singapore, and then I divided my time among Singapore, Thailand, and Bali.

Advice for Current Prospective Applicants:
–What is one thing you would absolutely do again as part of your application process?
One thing I would do again as part of the application process is to focus on self-reflection and growth. I learned a lot about my value and how to effectively articulate my military experience. MBA applications are a significant time commitment but the return on that investment extends beyond admission to an MBA program. With each application I submitted I reflected and refined my narrative.

I believe it’s important to emphasize that a GRE/GMAT score is only one facet of an application.  In my opinion, what truly sets candidates apart are their experiences and the authenticity they bring to the program. This skill is not just important for MBA applications; it’s a key part of telling your story throughout the program.  By putting in the effort during the application process, you will be better prepared for what lies ahead.

–What is one thing you would change or do differently?
If I could change one thing about my application process, it would be to prioritize connecting with current students from the beginning. I didn’t engage with any current students until after my acceptance, and I realize now how valuable their support and insights would have been. The willingness of those already in the program to answer questions is incredible.

–What is one part you would have skipped if you could—and what helped you get through it?
If I had the choice, I would have skipped the section of the application process that involved recorded video prompts. I found these to be more stressful than in-person interviews.  To get through this challenge, I turned to Clear Admit, which was a great resource during my preparation.

What is your initial impression of the Carnegie Mellon Tepper students/culture/community?
My initial impression of the Tepper School’s culture and community reflects the genuine warmth I experienced during Welcome Weekend. That weekend wasn’t just a performance; that initial connection has only grown stronger since then. Over the past few weeks, I’ve encountered incredibly intelligent and supportive peers who are eager to get to know one another. The feeling of inclusivity here is remarkable, especially for those in the LGBTQ+ community, I have felt welcomed and valued. I’ve never experienced such an instant bond in a group of this size—everyone is excited to build friendships and support one another.

What is one thing you have learned about Carnegie Mellon Tepper that has surprised you?
The Tepper School is a not the only “big name on campus.”  The School of Drama is also highly ranked, and I am a huge Suits fan. Gabriel Macht, who plays Harvey Spencer, is a CMU alumnus.

What is one thing you are most anxious about in your first year?
One of my biggest anxieties about my first year is the program’s strong focus on quantitative analysis. With an undergraduate degree in communication and professional experience in military operations, I feel apprehensive about transitioning into a more quantitative-heavy curriculum.

What is one thing you are most excited about in your first year?
One aspect I’m most excited about in my first year is the fast-paced, high-pressure environment that often characterizes an MBA program. Having served aboard submarines, I thrive in challenging situations. I look forward to tackling the intense workload and celebrating the small victories with my class along the way as I navigate this journey.
