Why did you choose UMD Smith? What factors figured most prominently into your decision of where to attend?
I chose UMD Smith for its unique combination of academic rigor, industry connections, and a strong emphasis on experiential learning. The proximity to Washington, D.C. provides unparalleled access to top-tier companies, government institutions, and thought leaders, which makes it a fantastic location for networking and real-world exposure. Additionally, Smith’s data-driven approach to business education aligns perfectly with my goal of transitioning into product management. The collaborative culture at Smith was also a significant factor in my decision, as I wanted to be part of a community that fosters learning through teamwork and shared experiences, rather than competition.

What do you think is your most valuable or differentiating contribution to the Class of 2026?
My six years of work experience across varied domains, combined with my exposure to working in client facing roles, gives me a unique edge in the classroom. I am able to bridge theoretical concepts with practical applications, which allows me to contribute meaningfully to discussions. Having worked in complex environments across industries, I bring a problem-solving mindset that focuses on real-world implementation and impact. My diverse background not only enriches my own learning but also helps my peers by providing insights into how businesses operate at a global scale. I’m also excited to share my experiences and learn from the incredible diversity within the Smith community.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself that didn’t get included on your application:
I love trekking and the thrill of adventure it brings. I went on my first trek when I was 17, and since then, I’ve been on more than 20 expeditions. These experiences have taught me resilience, patience, and the importance of teamwork, all qualities I bring into my professional life as well. Trekking pushes me beyond my limits, and that’s a mentality I apply to my academic and career goals, too.

Post-MBA career interests:
I am passionate about transitioning into product management post-MBA. My interest lies in leveraging technology and data to create user-centric products that solve real-world problems. I’m excited about the opportunity to develop my leadership skills in this space and explore how I can drive innovation in product development.

Advice for Current Prospective Applicants:
–What is one thing you would absolutely do again as part of your application process?
Getting strong recommendation letters was one of the most critical steps in my application process. They not only validated my professional experiences but also gave the admissions committee a deeper understanding of my potential from the perspective of my supervisors and colleagues. I would highly recommend focusing on building meaningful professional relationships to secure impactful recommendations.

–What is one thing you would change or do differently?
I would definitely start applying early, ideally in Round 1. The additional time would have allowed me to fine-tune my application, reflect more on my goals, and better position myself for interviews. Early application also offers the advantage of potentially more available spots in the program.

–What is one part you would have skipped if you could—and what helped you get through it?
If I could have skipped the waiting period between submitting applications and receiving decisions, I would have! It was an anxious time, but what helped me get through it was staying focused on my current responsibilities and keeping up with my professional development. Talking to alumni and keeping my long-term goals in mind also kept me motivated.

What is your initial impression of the UMD Smith MBA students/culture/community?
My initial impression of the UMD Smith community is that it’s a tightly-knit and incredibly supportive environment. The small class sizes foster strong relationships not only among students but also with faculty and career coaches, creating an atmosphere where collaboration thrives over competition. There’s a genuine sense of camaraderie that encourages personal and professional growth.

What is one thing you have learned about UMD Smith that has surprised you?
I was pleasantly surprised by the extensive mentorship opportunities available at UMD Smith. The access to both peer and professional mentors is truly impressive, and it’s clear that the school places a high value on personalized career development.

What is one thing you are most anxious about in your first year?
Given the current economic climate, I’m most anxious about navigating the unstable job market and the volatility in the global economy. It adds a layer of uncertainty to the typical MBA journey, particularly when it comes to securing internships and full-time roles. However, I’m optimistic that the resources at Smith—such as its career services and strong alumni network—will help in mitigating some of these concerns by providing guidance and support tailored to this challenging environment.

What is one thing you are most excited about in your first year?
I’m incredibly excited about the opportunities to expand my network and engage in new experiences. From meeting classmates from diverse professional and cultural backgrounds to attending career fairs and conferences, I look forward to immersing myself in events that will push me out of my comfort zone. I’m also eager to participate in experiential learning opportunities, such as case competitions and consulting projects, which will allow me to apply classroom knowledge to real-world business problems while working alongside talented peers.
