Why did you choose to pursue an M.S. Environment and Sustainability Management?
After gaining some experience with carbon accounting at IBM, I became increasingly interested in environmental sustainability. This work resonated with my personal values and professional goals. Given my existing background in traditional business, I recognized the need to deepen my knowledge of sustainability practices and acquire the necessary credentials to transition into a more impactful career. Pursuing an MS in Environment and Sustainability Management will provide me with the specialized skills and expertise to contribute meaningfully to a sustainable future.

Why did you choose Georgetown McDonough? What factors figured most prominently into your decision of where to attend?
I was drawn to Georgetown University for several reasons. First, its strategic location in the nation’s capital provides unparalleled access to the latest environmental policies and trends. Second, the university’s renowned faculty and staff offer exceptional academic and professional opportunities. Finally, the strong endorsement from friends and colleagues who are Georgetown alumni, coupled with the university’s extensive and active alumni network, solidified my decision to pursue my graduate studies at Georgetown.

What about your Georgetown MS-ESM experience prepared you for your current career?
The program’s broad curriculum allowed me to explore various areas of interest within environmental sustainability. I was particularly drawn to the opportunities to learn about strategies for transitioning industries away from carbon-intensive processes. By applying the foundational knowledge gained from the program, I am now able to develop more specialized expertise in energy and greenhouse gas management in my day-to-day role.

Why did you choose your current company? What factors figured most prominently into your decision of where to work?
A significant factor in my decision to join my current company was the opportunity to work under the mentorship of Anand Varahala. Having met him earlier this year at a DOE event, I was impressed by his depth of knowledge and extensive experience. I was eager to join his team and learn from their expertise.

Additionally, my research into Schneider Electric revealed it to be a highly impactful company with ambitious climate goals. The company’s ESG teams, backed by strong management support, are poised to accelerate their sustainability efforts. This alignment with my personal values and career aspirations made Schneider Electric an ideal choice.

What do you think has been the ROI on your Georgetown MS-ESM degree?
Given that I recently transitioned from a high-paying field to a sustainability-focused career, it is too early to assess the monetary return on investment of my Georgetown MS-ESM degree. However, I have already experienced a few non-monetary benefits. The program has provided me with the knowledge and skills necessary to pursue a fulfilling and purpose-driven career in sustainability.

What piece of advice do you wish you had been given during your MS-ESM?
One piece of advice I wish I had received during my MS-ESM program is to identify a specific area of sustainability that truly interests you and specialize in it. While a broad understanding of sustainability is valuable, having a deep expertise in a particular niche can set you apart in the job market. By focusing on your chosen specialization, you can build strong professional relationships and pursue opportunities that align with your passions and goals.
