Jan Delkeskamp, Duke Fuqua MMS Class of 2025

Age: 25
Hometown: Dabringhausen, Northrhine Westfalia, Germany
Undergraduate Institution and Major: Finance & Accounting, Queens University of Charlotte
Pre-MMS Work Experience: Chief of Staff, Queens Athletics, 1 year

Why did you make the decision to attend business school? Why now?
I chose to attend business school to complement my numbers-driven background in finance and accounting with a broader, more holistic academic foundation. This includes disciplines such as corporate strategy, decision-making analysis, and executive-level communication. Additionally, business school provides the ideal environment to expand my professional network and create meaningful connections, positioning me for a successful transition into the corporate world.

Why did you choose Duke Fuqua? What factors figured most prominently into your decision of where to attend?
The reason I have excelled and enjoyed my collegiate and professional swimming career in the U.S. is the team-oriented nature of the sport here. Joining #TeamFuqua felt like a natural extension of that momentum and mindset. Fuqua not only fosters a collaborative culture that allows me to continue honing my leadership and teamwork skills but also genuinely embodies the value of connectivity. The extensive alumni network and their active engagement are invaluable assets that set me up for success in my professional growth and recruiting journey.

What do you think is your most valuable or differentiating contribution to the class?
My unique blend of international experience, shaped by my German heritage and being the first in my family to cross the Atlantic Ocean, allows me to bring a global perspective to discussions. Further, my 15 years as a professional swimmer, including representing my country on the global stage and leading Queens University Swimming to multiple consecutive national championships under high-pressure conditions, allowed me to develop a strong ability to foster collaboration and resilience. These experiences enable me to contribute a well-rounded, results-driven mindset and inspire meaningful engagement with my peers.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself that didn’t get included on your application:
To me, the most meaningful gift is a handwritten thank-you note.

Post-MMS career interests:
Having always had a true passion for civil aviation, my career interests are less about focusing on a specific industry initially but being very intentional about the people I will be working alongside. Aspiring to mentor the next generation of leaders, I aim to join a rotational program that allows me to grow into a versatile leadership role. Investment in human capital is a key priority for me, and I believe this aligns with my goal of creating meaningful impact within any organization I join.

Advice for Current Prospective Applicants:
–What is one thing you would absolutely do again as part of your application process?
I would definitely reach out to current students and alumni of the schools you are considering. Their responses—or lack thereof—will give you valuable insight into the culture and values of the institution.

–What is one thing you would change or do differently?
Meeting people at your potential future academic destination is invaluable. Although being on the other side of the Atlantic initially made this more challenging, I now realize how impactful these experiences are. Thus, I would prioritize attending recruiting and campus events during the application process.

–What is one part you would have skipped if you could—and what helped you get through it?
I spent too much time researching school resources, opportunities, and experiences online through blogs and forums. In retrospect, picking up the phone or visiting in person provides far better insights. Talking to people directly has been a true game-changer for me!

What is your initial impression of the Duke Fuqua MMS students/culture/community?
Fuqua is a place where people genuinely connect. The #TeamFuqua spirit is not just a tagline—it is reflected in the responsiveness and support of alumni, the collaborative teamwork in classes, and traditions like Fuqua Fridays, where the entire Fuqua community gathers for a meal, sparking a sense of togetherness and belonging. The diversity of backgrounds among classmates creates a unique opportunity to learn and grow together.

What is one thing you have learned about Duke Fuqua that has surprised you?
I was surprised to find that a competitive and academically rigorous environment can also feel deeply supportive and welcoming. You do not have to choose between intellectual challenge and community—Fuqua truly fosters both. This aligns perfectly with my life motto: “Show me your friends, and I’ll show you your future.”
