From the outfield to the office, Sam Fuld has built a career in “America’s favorite pastime” — baseball.

Sam Fuld, General Manager, Philadelphia Phillies

After earning the title of All-American twice at Stanford University, Fuld was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in 2004 and made his major league debut in 2007. He enjoyed an eight-season Major League Baseball (MLB) career with teams including the Chicago Cubs, Tampa Bay Rays, Minnesota Twins, and Oakland Athletics. Then, the Philadelphia Phillies hired Fuld in 2017 as the Major League Player Information Coordinator, a position he held for two years before being promoted to Director, Integrative Baseball Performance in January 2020. Today, Fuld is entering his eighth year in the Phillies organization and fifth as General Manager, playing a key role in shaping the team’s strategy and performance.

As he prepares for the future, Fuld is partaking in his own “spring training” of sorts — with an executive MBA at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

And this is where we pick up Fuld’s run, at the intersection of business, education and baseball. In this special episode of the Clear Admit MBA Admissions Podcast, host Graham Richmond sits down with Fuld, as he pursues his MBA at Wharton and prepares to take on the role of President of Business Operations upon his graduation in 2026.

This in-depth interview offers listeners an inside look at sports management, leadership, and the business of entertainment. Hear directly from Fuld about:

  • His roles at the Phillies
  • How an MBA supports his progress
  • The Wharton application experience
  • Advice for MBAs interested in breaking into the business side of baseball

…and more! To round off the interview, Richmond engaged Fuld in a rapid-fire session of baseball-based questions.
