Ross MBA Admissions Interview Questions: Round 1 / On-Campus / Second-year Student

I interviewed on Dec 1, 2011 as part of the R1 application process for Ross. I got in the afternoon before, so I was able to do a little bit of exploring in the AA area on my own to get a feel for how it was as a town. I loved everything I saw. The main street area, the Big House, the Ross building–it was all amazing and I loved every second of it.

On the big day (interview day) I woke up early to make sure I gave myself enough time to get the the building and get relaxed. I scheduled my interview for the 845 slot, the earliest they offered, so that I could knock it out and not worry about it the rest of the day. The interview was done in a small room in the Admissions office with an MBA2. He only had my resume and apparently had a set of questions from which he chose a few (I didn’t see his list).

Questions:

  • Tell me about yourself
  • Goals (Short to Long)
  • Why MBA/Now?
  • Why Ross (this seemed to be a big one as he was very proud of his school)?
  • Tell me about a time you had conflict on a team. How did you resolve this?
  • Tell me about a time you were disappointed at work? Why?
  • What would you contribute to Ross?
  • What leadership positions would you pursue at Ross?

The interview lasted roughly 45 min and unfortunately I didn’t get to ask him any follow up questions as he had to run to a group meeting. However, I was able to get his contact info and he invited me to sit with him in his valuation class later that day to chat for a few more minutes.

I had prepared thoroughly for most of the interview questions asked, however, for one reason or another I never though to prepare for the disappointment question. This took me off guard, so I took a few seconds to compose my thoughts then jumped into the answer. The interviewer was very engaged, kept eye contact, took notes, asked probing follow ups, etc.

My best advice would be to PREPARE. I knew what was coming so I felt very confident heading into the interview room. This gave me a level of comfort that I was able to convey through my answers.

Result: Admitted for the class of 2014!

I’ve already decided to attend the Ross School because I felt so comfortable during my interview and visit. AA and the Ross school was the first school I visited that felt like ‘home.’
