It can be nearly impossible for today’s medical students to stay up to date with the ever-evolving healthcare industry. Now, a new two-year executive MBA/M.S. healthcare leadership dual-degree program offered by the Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management and the Weill Cornell Graduate School of Medical Sciences offers a way to meet that challenge.
“This new program will enable medical professionals to innovate as hospitals and healthcare systems face increasing challenges to their business model,” Cornell College of Business Dean Soumitra Dutta said in a statement. “The key lies in providing a unique blend of business and healthcare skills required to thrive as a leader today.”
The new program is set to begin in fall 2017. Students will meet at the Weill Cornell Medicine facilities in New York City and attend two separate week-long residencies in each of the two years in the program. One will be during the spring in New York City, and one will occur in the summer on Cornell’s Ithaca campus.
Students in the program will take core courses designed around each degree, but with specialized electives. Among the electives on offer will be managing and leading organizations, managerial finance and health policy. As well, students will work in teams on a final six-month capstone project offering management assistance to a healthcare organization. At the end of the project, students will present a detailed plan to the organization recommending strategy changes.
“As our healthcare landscape continues to evolve, it is increasingly important that we cultivate leaders in the field who can drive national dialogue and spearhead new initiatives in healthcare policy and delivery,” Gary Koretzky, dean of the Weill Cornell Graduate School of Medical Sciences, said in a statement. “Our unique collaboration with Johnson will equip aspiring healthcare leaders with a keen grasp of health policy and informatics—specialized skills that will lead to further innovation and ensure that patients receive the finest care at the greatest value.”
