UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business Class of 2022 officially kicked off the fall semester on August 24th, 2020. This year’s incoming UC Berkeley MBA class profile reveals students coming from a wide array of professional and academic backgrounds.

Bumps in Berkeley Class Size, Diversity

The 331 newly-admitted students make up the largest full-time MBA class in the school’s history. Thirty-nine percent of the class are women, a 2 percent increase over last year. Twenty-one percent are international students, a portion that represents 37 countries and does not include U.S. permanent residents or dual U.S. passport holders.

U.S. minorities, considered U.S. citizens and permanent residents who identify as Asian, Black, Hispanic, Native American, or multiethnic, comprise 39 percent of the total class. Underrepresented minorities are identified as U.S. citizens and permanent residents who identify as Black, Hispanic, Native American, or multiethnic, and make up 17 percent of the total class, up from 14 percent the previous year.

The professional and academic experience of the student body is distributed across many diverse industries, with 21 percent coming from consulting, 17 percent from financial services, 10 percent from tech, 8 percent from pharmaceutical and biotech, and 7 percent from the non-profit sector. Seventeen percent of students have an undergraduate degree in economics, 17 percent hold a degree in engineering, 16 percent in social sciences, and 13 percent in business commerce.

Building Community at Berkeley Haas 

Dean Ann Harrison welcomed students for the Week Zero virtual orientation program held from August 17th through the 21st. She spoke to the class about the unprecedented circumstances under which they and their fellow graduate students around the country are entering their MBA program, telling students, “This crazy time also requires you to be leaders yourselves. One of the most difficult things to learn is how to live with this uncertainty.”

The Class of 2022 has spearheaded efforts to stay connected amidst pandemic safety precautions, creating Slack channels based on shared interests and arranging virtual coffee chats while second-year students organized daily trivia nights and Zoom happy hours for their incoming classmates.
