292 students comprise the Two-Year MBA Class of 2022 at the Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management of Cornell University. This edition of Real Humans: MBA Students highlights some of their passions, common values and lessons from admissions.
But first, let’s take a closer look at the new crop of students. Altogether, the Class of 2022 at Johnson averages an age of 28 and five years of pre-MBA work experience. Ten percent of the Johnson Class of 2022 have a background in the military. Financial services had been the most popular industry of choice, as 30 percent of MBA candidates came from it. Consulting and technology followed at 11 percent each. Another eight percent came from the government/non-profit sector and five percent had worked in manufacturing. The rest of the class spread out across common industries, including consumer goods, healthcare, real estate and more.
Eighteen percent of the new Johnson MBA class are under-represented minorities (Black/African American, Native American, and Hispanic American) and thirty-nine percent identify as U.S. minorities (Asian American, Black/African American, Native American, and Hispanic American). Thirty-one percent of the group are women and 34 percent are international, representing 29 different countries.
The median GMAT of the new class was 700, with the 80 percent range landing at 640 to 740. During their undergraduate years, the group earned a median GPA of 3.34. Nearly half the class (48 percent) had majored in business. Another 15 percent had studied engineering and 11 percent social sciences. Nine percent pursued degrees in the sciences and another 7% studied humanities.
