Diversity and Representation in the NYU Stern Class of 2023
This year, Stern has adopted the new Graduate Management Education (GME) reporting standards, allowing the school to disclose more nuance around race and ethnicity. Multi-dimensional reporting enables students to identify as multiple races or ethnicities, giving a more comprehensive picture of the diversity of the class. While under federal reporting guidelines, Black students comprise 4% of the US domestic students, multi-dimensional reporting shows it’s actually 7%. Using the new GME guidelines, 1% of the class are Native North American, Native Hawaiian, or other Native Pacific Islander, 20% are Asian American, 11% are Hispanic, and 13% identify as multi-race.
Thirty-six percent of the class are US minority students, and 17% are historically underrepresented minorities. “In the spirit of the GME standards, as well as the School’s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, we are happy to offer more details in our class profile,” announced Dean Rios.
The MBA class includes students from 32 different countries, making up 32% of students. The number of US military veterans and active-duty members more than doubled over last year to 10% of the class. Women make up 41% of students.
Professional and Academic Background
The Stern Class of 2023’s average GMAT of 729 is the highest in the school’s history. The composition of undergraduate majors is similar to previous years, with 27% of students coming in with a business degree and 24% holding a degree in engineering, math, or science. Social science majors make up 20% of the class, economics 16%, and humanities and art students 13%.
The average length of professional careers for the class is just over five years, in line with most other US schools. Twenty-three percent of students came from the financial services industry and 12% from consulting. The technology, consumer retail, and military or government service sectors each comprised 9% of the class.
Stern is continuing their additional testing options, accepting the LSAT, MCAT, and DAT in addition to GMAT, GRE, and Executive Assessment scores, as well as waiver programs during the current admissions cycle.
