Hey Alex and Graham, huge fan of the podcast and I've been binge listening trying to pick up any pieces of knowledge I can.
Recently transitioned out of the military where I served as an Infantry Officer (May 2014-May 2018) and am currently working for my buddy's small blue collar start up that works on residential homes to bring them up to rental code for Higher Opportunity Neighborhoods.
Undergrad I attended Iowa State University where I double majored in Criminal Justice and Sociology with a 3.7 GPA. Iowa State had an outstanding Army ROTC program which is why I attended. They rank you nationally upon graduation from ROTC programs based on academics, leadership performance, extra curriculars, etc and I received the honor of placing top 10% in the nation and being awarded the title of distinguished military graduate. I was also heavily involved in my fraternity holding multiple positions to include one on the executive board. All the while serving in the Minnesota National Guard to put myself through school.
Upon joining active duty I graduated in the top of my class from the infantry school house and fast tracked at my unit to a position held by Officers with 18 months of experience after only 4 months.
I just recently came to the conclusion that I no longer want to work in the civil service industry (police department, fire department) and have been exploring other opportunities. In one of your episodes you discussed an infantry officer interested in ultra marathons and wondered why he wouldn't want to apply to sports related companies and that set off a light bulb in my head. I have been involved in Army athletic competitions and challenges since 2014 and started coaching people during my last year of active duty. I love the exercise science community and would be absolutely floored to get the chance to work for one of these companies and combined my love for leadership and problem solving with the industry I'm interested in.
Recognizing my weakness's are my soft science major, the fact I already got off of active duty so I could be viewed as being stagnate possibly, and obviously I need to study for the GMAT.
I plan on taking MBA math to boost the Math weakness and taking the GMAT this spring after studying through the fall and winter.
Any recommendations or insight for what my next steps should be would be awesome.
