Academics

Faculty

Brigham Young has 171 full-time, part-time, and adjunct faculty. About 60 faculty members teach courses in the MBA program each semester across the following departments: Accounting, Entrepreneurship, Experience Design & Management, Finance, Global Supply Chain, Human Resources, Information Systems, Marketing, and Strategy. Many of the BYU Marriott faculty members serve on professional associations, committees, and councils. Some faculty members serve as editors on professional publications. Almost all the faculty are involved in significant research.

Curriculum

The BYU Marriott MBA uses a variety of teaching styles, including interactive lecture and discussion, case studies, simulations, and experiential learning. Group work is part of all four teaching methods so that students learn to build and lead teams, collaborate on assignments, and develop accountability.

BYU Marriott requires three pre-term primer courses and an in-person residency week at the beginning of the first semester for class orientation. First-year students take all their classes together during the first year. The class is broken down into sections of approximately 50 students each and further organized into smaller learning teams of approximately five students each. Teams are composed of people from different undergraduate majors, academic backgrounds, language backgrounds, and previous work experiences.

MBA students are required to complete 64 credits, 36 of which come from core credits and 28 from electives. Students are enrolled in the management core classes during the first year (two 15-week semesters) of study. The core covers foundational business principles in finance, operations, strategy, leadership, entrepreneurship and more. BYU Marriott does not offer course waivers.

Following the second semester of the program, students are strongly encouraged to spend the summer in independent work experiences or internships.

While MBA students may begin taking elective courses in the winter semester of their first year, the second year opens up opportunities to specialize in a specific discipline and take courses of particular interest. The second year begins with the last two core classes supplemented by track electives. BYU Marriott provides a broad range of elective courses from which to choose, and students may direct their studies toward a minor, track, emphases, or specific interests, which include:

  • Analytics
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Global business certificate
  • Healthcare
  • Information systems
  • International business
  • Product management
  • Social innovation
  • Strategy

Additionally, BYU Marriott offers a STEM specialization that requires students to take 15 credits of specific electives in addition to the 12 credits of STEM-related classes already present in the MBA core. Students may also specialize in consulting in addition to choosing a track.

Other MBA Degree Options

The EMBA at BYU Marriott is a 54-credit program and is designed for working professionals. Classes are held every other week on Fridays and Saturdays at the BYU Salt Lake Center, with a few residency weeks throughout the year.

Dual degree options include law and engineering. The Marriott School of Business, J. Reuben Clark Law School, and Ira A. Fulton College of Engineering administer the MBA/JD degree and MBA/MS degree.
