What are your short-term career goals and how will the Full-Time MBA program at Michigan State University’s Broad College of Business help you achieve them? Please answer in 500 words or less.
This is a trimmed down version of a typical career goals essay. You will want to directly assert your short-term goal, naming your target industry, function and some ideal firms (it could help to review Broad’s career services connections to confirm what’s feasible here). It would also help to elaborate on what will be expected of you in this role—as this can set up the skills you need from a Broad MBA. Space permitting, you may briefly touch on your long-term goal to lend meaning to your short-term plans.
Most of your discussion should focus on the Broad MBA offerings and how they will empower you to achieve your goal. Taking the time to learn about the school’s curriculum, special programs and extracurricular activities—whether by seeking out alumni or current students to engage, or reviewing resources through the Broad website—will pay dividends here in drawing rich, specific connections. Keep in mind that you may be able to weave in some of your career history, if you can cite how it showed you the skills that you need to hone with an MBA. For instance, perhaps a client project showed you that you need a richer understanding of finance or operations to develop truly robust solutions.

It’s possible that there are other elements of your background that would be appropriate and not covered elsewhere, for example an anticipated promotion or an element of your identity not covered in the program’s data forms. This can also invite elaboration on experiences that showcase further commitment to your goals or how you would excel in the classroom or as a team member. Review your other materials to make sure you are truly adding new information here, and ensure you are enhancing the presentation of your candidacy.
Those who need to address why they are requesting an English proficiency waiver should cite concrete evidence. You can highlight if any degree-earning coursework was taught to you in English, how you use English on a daily basis (reading, writing, speaking) and any other context that supports your skills.
