Interview Invite to Dartmouth / Tuck

Note:

Applied just after R1 (guaranteed interview window for R2)- my GMAT waiver was not approved in time for R1.
30M Indian national working in O&G trading. Mechanical Engineering undergrad in India(4.0 equivalent GPA) and Master of Science degree from Duke University (3.6 GPA).
Chose to do the in-person interview at Tuck. Tuck is the only school I applied to this year and excited/nervous on how things will go. Hoping the waiver won't significantly ding my candidacy as I am from an ORM group.

Thanks for sharing! Is there a reason you went the waiver route? Have you ever taken the GMAT or GRE? Did you do so when you applied to your grad program at Duke? If so, how did you do?

I ask because there are a couple of factors that would make me want to have a test score from you if I were on the admissions team:

1. You are a slightly older candidate, so a test score would help give me a very recent reading on your academic aptitude and make me more comfortable with your ability to hit the ground running as you adjust to life as a student again after several years.

2. You are part of an over-represented portion of the candidate pool (Indian, engineer), and that portion of the pool often performs strongly on the testing component of the admissions process. So on some levels, the adcom are not getting a number from you that might help with overall stats as they assemble a class, if that makes sense.

At this point, I suppose you need to see where the chips fall (unless you can take the test in the coming month or so and furnish the admissions team with your score before they make a final call). Either way, solely applying to a single top program is always going to be a high risk affair, but let's hope things go your way.

bluedevil7 Likes Earned: 10 Thanks grichmond! Went down the waiver route for a couple of reasons. Didn't have the time to take it by R1, since that was what I was targeting originally. I already have admits from a couple of reputed European B-Schools (deferred to the next intake) and wanted to try my hand at Tuck specifically before I make a final decision. In hindsight, might want to explore the option of staying in the US in the short term. I work on a trading floor so I was confident that my true ability to hit the ground running from a quantitative perspective is fine although I understand the metrics perspective from adcom. Hoping that doesn't severely impact my candidacy. All things equal, I'm hopeful that getting the waiver truly puts me on equal footing although I know that's probably not how it works. Thanks for the input and advice. Doing an in-person interview next month and hopefully things work out! (0)
