Yale School of Management to Host First Global Network Week for Faculty

Yale School of Management (SOM) next week will welcome faculty members from the 27 business schools that are members of the Global Network for Advanced Management as part of a four-day program designed to foster collaboration around issues of sustainability. The program, organized by the Yale Center for Business and the Environment, will begin on July 21st. The faculty event is an outgrowth of the network’s successful Global Network Weeks, which drew together students from the various member schools for weeklong courses with colleagues from peer schools. Coding Finds Its Way Into Top Business School Curriculums

Harvard Business School (HBS) plans to offer a computer programming elective within the next couple of years, and other top business schools may be moving in the same direction as more companies seek MBAs with strong technical skills, according to a recent report in Bloomberg BusinessWeek. Paul Gompers, who chairs the MBA elective curriculum at HBS, notes that MBA students there have formed coding clubs or head across to Harvard’s Cambridge campus to take introductory computer science, but that a course specifically tailored to business students is needed at the school. “This is the changing nature of the workforce, and this is what our graduates are going on to be doing in the next five to 10 to 20 years,” Gompers told Bloomberg BW. GMAC Adds Online Content, Resources to Its GMAT Review Series

The Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC), in partnership with Wiley, is enhancing its Official Guide for GMAT® Review series with added online content, videos and a unique study tool that lets users customize their own practice question sets, the council announced today. The enhancements to the Official Guide for GMAT® Review 2015 are designed to make studying for the GMAT exam easier and more convenient, according to GMAC, which owns and administers the business school entrance exam. GMAC has published 13 previous editions of its Official Guide for GMAT Review, giving business school applicants access to hundreds of real, retired GMAT questions. The 2015 series is the first to combine questions in both book and online form. Read more

Fridays From the Frontline

MBA Students from Leading Global Business Schools to Help Child Cancer Charity

A United Kingdom charity focused on helping children with cancer in developing countries will receive an infusion of expertise and energy this summer as more than 40 students from top business schools in Asia, Africa, Europe and the Americas develop plans to tackle business problems faced by the organization. The students, working in teams as part of the Financial Times MBA Challenge, will assist the FT’s seasonal appeal partner, which this year is World Child Cancer (WCC). Seven teams of students – who hail from schools including Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business, Oxford Saïd Business School, the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business, London Business School, ESADE and IE Business School, among others – will each be partnered with a mentor and required to submit a business plan in September on a set topic. New Johnson Graduate School of Management Application Permits LinkedIn Submissions

Applicants to Cornell University’s Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management can now incorporate their LinkedIn profiles as part of the school’s redesigned application. Johnson is using LinkedIn’s open platform to allow MBA applicants to pre-fill employment history, educational background and other parts of their application with information from their LinkedIn profiles. Candidates who submit information in this way are asked to grant the school access to their full LinkedIn profiles as part of the application process. Read more

UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School Announces Second Online Degree Program

The University of North Carolina’s Kenan-Flagler Business School will offer a second online degree, its top-ranked Master of Accounting (MAC) Program, the school announced this week. Pending approval, the new program, called Accounting@UNC, is scheduled to launch in July 2015. The decision to offer this second degree was driven both by the school’s successful track record in delivering quality online education and by strong hiring demand for the school’s MAC graduates, Kenan-Flagler reports. The school launched its first online degree program, MBA@UNC, in 2011. It has grown from 19 students in the first class to 550 students today. Read more

Alumni Gift to Fund Construction of New Conference Center at Harvard Business School

Harvard Business School (HBS) last month announced plans to build a new center on its Boston campus that will serve as a place for students, faculty, alumni and business leaders to convene and share ideas. Called Klarman Hall in recognition of a generous alumni gift, the new building will feature a large conference center, a performance space and a community gathering space and is expected to open in 2018. A gift from Seth Klarman (MBA 1982) and his wife Beth will make the construction of the new facility possible. Klarman is president and CEO of Boston-based investment management firm the Baupost Group, his wife is president of the Klarman Family Foundation and both serve as members of HBS’s Board of Dean’s Advisors. UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business Names New Career Management Group Leader

Julia Min Hwang was named head of the Career Management Group at UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business last month, a role in which she will serve all Haas students and alumni in the school’s full-time MBA, evening and weekend MBA and Berkeley MBA for Executives programs. Named executive director of career management services and corporate engagement on June 2nd, Hwang will also oversee corporate engagement for Haas, including cultivating relationships with prospective employers to increase student career opportunities as well as for speaking engagements and experiential learning opportunities. Meet MIT Sloan School of Management Admissions Team Members Around the Globe

Members of the admissions team at the MIT Sloan School of Management are hitting the road in a big way, with admissions events scheduled in every corner of the globe over the next few months. UCLA’s Anderson School of Management Becomes Self-Supporting

Beginning today, the University of California at Los Angeles’s Anderson School of Management will give up state funding and instead become self-supporting, the school announced. Anderson’s dean last week signed a three-year deal with the university provost through which the school’s full-time MBA program will turn down state subsidies in exchange for greater control over faculty recruitment and salary levels and the ability to determine its own tuition, among other things. McDonough School of Business Admissions Director Reveals New Essay Question to Clear Admit

GMAT Test Takers Can Now Preview Scores Before Reporting or Canceling Them

Prospective applicants to business school who take the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) will now have the ability to preview their unofficial scores before deciding whether to report or cancel them, the Graduate Management Admissions Council (GMAC), which owns and administers the exam, announced yesterday. This new score reporting feature, available to all test takers, will go into effect at all 600 test centers worldwide that administer the exam beginning tomorrow. "We are pleased to offer this feature as part of our efforts to make preparing for and taking the GMAT exam easier," Ashok Sarathy, GMAC vice president of product management, said in a statement. "The new score reporting feature gives test takers more certainty and control in the testing process and in how their scores are reported to schools." Read more

Some Business Schools Adopt Tracking Software in a Bid to Increase Yield

A number of top-tier business schools have begun to use software to track prospective applicants’ interactions with their school in an effort to gauge how interested they are in attending, according to a recent article in Bloomberg BusinessWeek. The data points – which can include whether a student has emailed admissions staff, how many admissions events they’ve attended and whether they requested program information – are now included in candidate profiles alongside test scores and essay responses, Bloomberg BW adds. Most schools report that student interest isn’t a main factor in admissions decisions, but the fact that increasing numbers of schools are using the tracking programs suggest that the data gathered counts for something. A Glimpse Inside the Lives of Nine Stanford Graduate School of Business MBAs

You can learn what it’s like to be an MBA student at the Stanford Graduate School of Business (GSB) straight from students themselves thanks to a cool feature earlier this month on the school’s MBA Blog. Called, aptly, “A Week in the Life,” the feature includes nine profiles of students from the Class of 2015 sharing their day-to-day experiences over the course of a normal week at business school. The group includes four men and five women who came from around the country and the globe to pursue their MBA at Stanford. Ross School of Business MBAs Win Global Sustainability Challenge

A team of MBA students from the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business defeated finalists from Yale School of Management and Rollins School of Business earlier this week to win the 2014 Nespresso Sustainability MBA Challenge, the school reports. In total, 59 teams from business schools in 19 different countries took part in the challenge, in which Nespresso invited them to develop innovative solutions to issues surrounding its supply chain of high-quality coffee. HEC Paris Launches New Leadership Certificate with Pernod Ricard

HEC Paris earlier this month launched a new “Leadership” Certificate as part of its partnership with wine and spirits producer Pernod Ricard. The certificate program, offered to all HEC Paris students, will include approximately 100 hours of lessons and conferences between April and June. The content of the new certificate program is designed to help students examine the relationship between human capital and business performance and to support a vision of leadership that dovetails with Pernod Ricard’s culture and values. Background: mid-to-late 20s US citizen, lower-income single parent upbringing.

Work experience: currently a manager at a humanitarian INGO in active / post-conflict settings (think Afghanistan, Yemen, etc.) with several million in project budget under management and overseeing multiple teams. Will have been in emergency aid for 2 years upon matriculation, career before that was 1 year quantitative analyst ---> 1 year teaching English abroad. High impact job, recently promoted.

Academics: 3.27 cumulative. Small state school for first year with a 4.0. Transferred to an Ivy, but had to work full time to support family, had just above a 3.0 at the Ivy. I've also done a masters since at a top 5 UK (shout-out to Alex!) with distinction (3.9+ equivalent). Additionally, took Calculus this year (got an A-) to give schools a bit more reassurance on quant abilities since my quant record in college had its ups and downs, and to demonstrate respect for the rigors of the Y1 MBA curriculum.

Test: took the GMAT only once, 685 (86V 82Q 84D). First mock exam was a 625 with a terrible quant score, but brought quant up to 76th percentile with a couple months of study. Internet is too slow to take online, so only had one chance to do it in-person while I was on leave -- retake physically impossible even if I wanted to.

ECs: Very focused on social entrepreneurship. Have also been helping teach / support one of the foreign language programs at the state school I originally went to and transferred out of. Community service award as well, and mountain climber.

Post-MBA goal is social entrepreneurship that can help people in crisis contexts.

I've listened to enough Wire Taps to guess exactly what the advice will be: "You might want to cast a wider net due to the lower GPA, right now you're only targeting top schools." -- Absolutely fair call. However, what I want to do is extremely difficult and will require a ton of resources. I've selected the programs I think best fit my goals / have a strong social and entrepreneurial mission. I don't particularly mind getting dinged everywhere and reapplying next year if need be.
