Harvard, Stanford, Wharton Tie for First in U.S. News Business School Rankings

U.S. News & World Report released its annual rankings of the best graduate schools, and a familiar cast of characters topped the list of top business schools, though with a few minor shifts. The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania sashayed up from third place up to tie for first with Harvard Business School and Stanford Graduate School of Business. The University of Chicago Booth School of Business gained some ground as well, moving up from the No. 6 spot last year to No. 4 this year. Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management, meanwhile, dipped – sliding into the No. 6 spot vacated by Chicago Booth. MIT’s Sloan School of Management, which tied with Kellogg for fourth last year, also slipped, falling to fifth place. Read more

Students from U Michigan’s Ross School of Business Fan the Globe for Action-Based Learning

First-year students from the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business are setting out today toward 81 companies spread across 24 countries as part of the school’s Multidisciplinary Action Projects (MAPs). Every spring, the school’s 450 or so first-year MBAs take part in this core requirement, which the school touts as one of the most intensive action-based learning programs of its kind. The students are assigned to companies for seven-week stints, during which time they learn first hand as part of everything from new product launches to digital banking. Participating companies include Microsoft, Amazon and Sustainable Harvest, among many others. Read more

Admissions Tip: Extracurricular Activities

Because it’s the time of year when applicants aiming for Fall 2015 intake are just beginning to think about the admissions process, we wanted to focus today on one element of the application that candidates often underestimate: extracurricular activities. In order to understand why this category is important, candidates should keep in mind that the adcom is responsible for crafting a dynamic class each year. The aim is to admit individuals who will support a vibrant campus community and step into leadership positions. In other words, as admissions officers consider each applicant, they ask themselves “what’s in it for our school?” An applicant who has previously demonstrated a talent for writing, for example, by contributing to a nonprofit’s newsletter, will really catch the adcom’s attention if she also expresses her intent to contribute to a specific publication on campus. Women in Leadership Conference to Tackle Design Thinking at UC Berkeley’s Haas School

Students at UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business are gearing up to host the 18th annual Women in Leadership Conference next week, focused around the theme of “Design Your Future,” the school announced. Tech leaders from Synopsus, Lending Club and Kaiser Permanente will take part in the March 15th event, which is the longest-running, student-organized conference in the school’s history. Interview duration was roughly 2 hours, of which I was being interviewed for between 60-70 minutes. Stanford Graduate School of Business Revokes MBA Degree From Convicted Inside Trader

Stanford Graduate School of Business (GSB) yesterday confirmed that, for the first time ever, it has stripped a graduate of his MBA degree because he was admitted to the program under “false pretenses,” the Wall Street Journal reports. The graduate in question – former SAC Capital Advisors employee Mathew Martoma, who completed his MBA in 2003 – was convicted last month of insider trading charges. “Martoma does not have a Stanford MBA,” Stanford GSB spokesperson Barbara Buell confirmed in a separate report by PoetsandQuants. Chicago Booth School of Business Promotes Its Chicago Business Fellows Program for Young Professionals

Through posts to its Evening and Weekend MBA Admissions Blog and Twitter, the University of Chicago Booth School of Business is getting the word out about its Chicago Business Fellows (CBF) program, designed for prospective applicants with limited work experience who want to earn an MBA while continuing to work. CBF, which debuted in 2005 as a subset of its Evening MBA and Weekend MBA programs, features a range of advantages for young professionals, including several sources of support throughout the program. CBF students in their first quarter take one or two academic courses, as well as one required professional skills development course. Students also receive peer coaching throughout the program and participate as part of a unique cohort system designed to provide further support. Read more

The Importance of Sequencing in Your MBA Career Plans

Among the questions I’ve been asked by MBAs, there are a number that tend to revolve around a set of common, universal concerns. Here are some of the most frequent: Is working for a big company better than working for a small boutique? Is it more important to work for a name-brand employer, rather than a niche, boutique firm that may lack equivalent credential-boosting power? Is it wise / necessary to undertake a couple of years, or more, of banking or consulting work post-MBA, even if that’s not my long-term desired industry choice? Is there any universal rule that allows you to label one job or company as “better” than another? The answers, of course, depend on the circumstances, on the student’s background and goals, and on a range of other factors, but that doesn’t mean that the questions above can’t be solved at least to some extent. There is, in fact, a single method and key one can use to help unlock these related questions: the concept of sequencing. Earlier in this weekly series, I discussed the role that evaluating industry, function, and organization plays in deciding which job is “better,” and/or the right one for you (see Three Categories for Choosing the Right Job). INSEAD to Celebrate Women with a Month Full of Events

To mark Women’s History Month, INSEAD has filled March with a string of events celebrating women and showcasing their achievements on its campuses in Europe, Asia, the Middle East and beyond. INSEAD’s first women’s event is a speaker session entitled, “Women @ Work.” The event will take place later this week, on Thursday, March 3rd on INSEAD’s Asia campus in Singapore. Claudia Zeisberger, academic director of INSEAD’s Global Private Equity Initiative (GPEI) and an affiliate professor of decision sciences and entrepreneurship and family enterprise, will lead the discussion examining women’s journey in the workplace from the sideline to center field. Stanford GSB MBA Admissions Interview Questions: Round 2 / Alumnus / Off-Campus

The interview was with an alumnus in his office, and overall very conversational and informal. I was asked fairly standard behavioral questions for the first ~45 minutes, and then we spent another 15 minutes talking about his experiences at Stanford. There were no curveball questions, but he definitely dug deep into each experience and was especially interested in my thought process.
