Hi guys I am addicted to listening to your podcast! Thank you so much for making B school information to people who come from non-consulting/IB backgrounds. I would love to know your thoughts on my odds at getting into HBS, GSB, Sloan and Columbia Business School. I am looking to apply Round 2 to HBS and Stanford! I do not come from a target background and in my own research find it difficult to compare myself to other applicants! I am a 25 year old female who graduated 3.87 GPA (summa cum laude) majoring in Mechanical Engineering and Minoring in Aerospace Engineering from a T30 university (this university's MBA program is within the T10). I participated in many extracurriculars in undergrad: president of the ASME (American Society of Engineers) Club, was a semi-finalist in our university's Entrepreneurship competition (mostly MBA's involved only 2 undergraduate teams including mine made it to the semi-finals), and held a leadership role in our schools Inaugural SAE Baja Competition ( a engineering design, build, and test competition). I had a great time in undergrad and enjoyed being involved in my community outside of my classes! I currently work at a Fortune 100 (Top 3) Aerospace and Defense Company as a Space Technology Strategy Analyst - prior to this role I was admitted to my companies' equivalent of a rotational program where all of my rotations were in the production environment - in my last two years I developed a process that allowed our engineers to cut down the development of their manufacturing plans by 75%. In my current role I work on realizing our technology roadmaps that are focused on developing discriminating technologies (antennas, electronics, RF, etc) that will increase our chances of winning a few of our captures. In this role I supplement our internal funding to develop these technologies with customer funding through proposal development in which I lead multi-disciplinary teams to craft compliant proposals. Currently I have won approximately $6 million of our divisions $10 million goal in customer funding to develop these technologies. I am in a leadership position of on of our companies affinity groups and have mentored interns over the summers. I am looking to go to b school because I want to transition into venture capital focused on aerospace startups. I loved working on a startup in undergrad and currently enjoy my current role in developing space technology and i feel like VC focused on space companies (very excited for the upcoming explosion in the space economy) allows me to combine all of my careers interests in one place. The low GMAT score is a result of being a poor standardized test taker - do you have any comments on how to increase my candidacy for these schools? Are there any other programs i should look into? I think GSB would be a great fit for obvious reasons. HBS has a women in investing club and has great connections for VC as well.
