Hello, I am a bit of an unusual candidate as I currently work for my family's small business (about 10 employees). I've been following Clear Admit and a few other MBA resources for awhile now and have yet to come across another small business applicant, so I would love to hear some feedback from Alex, Graham, Elliot, and the community on my profile.
I'm a 28 year old white male with a 770 GMAT (48q 48v), studied Economics at a top 10 US university (GPA 3.68), and began my career at a blue chip company in their finance leadership development rotational program. After two years I decided to take a leap of faith and go work for my family's small winery. The business is located in a non-prestigious wine region (think Virginia, Pennsylvania, Michigan, etc) but does about $2M in revenue per year. My role in the business is very broad - I manage all the finances as well as the marketing / branding work, and I do about a thousand other small tasks between the tasting room, vineyard, and wine production facility to ensure things run smoothly. I'm ready to move onto the next chapter in my life, and I'd like to use the MBA to transition to a career in product management or general management. My long term goal is to become a leader at a "small-biz tech" company - somewhere like Toast, Squarespace, or Gusto, but I understand these growth companies don't generally hire many MBAs straight out of school. So, I'm hoping to recruit for PM jobs at large, established, MBA-loving companies like Amazon, IBM, or Adobe and eventually transition to my dream job. There is a good chance I'll be moving to Salt Lake City after graduation (following my partner), and I know that will complicate things, but nonetheless this is what I'm thinking.
I have decent extracurriculars. I serve on the board of our industry group representing the wineries in my state and received an award from this group for "leadership and dedication" this past year. I also have been taking viticulture and winemaking courses for the past few years at our local community college and just finished up their certificate program (total of 10 courses, 26 credit hours). On top of that, I have some cool personal accomplishments that add a bit more depth to my resume. My letters of rec should be solid as well.
I'm curious to hear your opinions on a few things: Is my school target list too optimistic? Would I be considered an overrepresented candidate as a white male (I plan to apply to all of these schools in round 1 regardless)? Is it reasonable (from the Adcom's perspective) that I could pivot to a PM job with my background?
Thanks in advance for the comments. I'm a big time podcast listener and really appreciate all the wisdom the team gives to MBA applicants. Let’s kick on!
