Sponsored consultant in Sports & Entertainment group at consulting firm. Using MBA as a catalyst to grow industry knowledge and connections in sports industry before returning to same consulting firm to continue sports focused work. One part of the profile that I would like reviewed, is I am considered a semi-professional sports bettor who has published content on the side. Considering some of the schools I am applying to are located in states that do not have legalized sports betting should I leave that out of my application? Was planning on using my experience in the space as a differentiator/unique skillset for my outside of work questions.

alexbr4 Verified User. Likes Earned: 1676 Strong GPA, is 680 your best score for the GMAT? Might be worth considering a retake if you think you can push it over 700? Showing impact and growth at work is key. Outside of work activities are also important. For sports betting, are you providing content to recommend who to bet, or strategies in terms of how to bet? Not sure I’d differentiate by schools in states where sports betting is legal, but it might be a sensitive subject to tackle, similar to professional poker players, etc? (1)

anon28548 Likes Earned: 4 OP - Thanks Alex - in process of retaking GMAT before R1 deadlines. More so the content is providing strategies on how to bet to help amateur bettors understand the risks and addiction gambling can pose to the uneducated. Appreciate the insight. (1)

grichmond Verified User. Likes Earned: 1237 Gambling/betting is always going to be a tricky topic, since it has negative connotations and is pretty hard to pitch. This is not to say it cannot be done....it's just not the activity I'd seek to lead with if I had a choice. Also, while it sounds like you have done well in terms of work - and the schools will certainly like the sponsored candidate aspect - I do worry that your test score may not make the cut with your targets, especially if there are any other weaknesses. Let's suppose you can't really use the gambling advice angle - what else do you have in your personal/ECs that could be worth adding to the mix? A few final questions, are you male or female? American? ORM or URM? Best of luck with your GMAT retake! (2)

anon28548 Likes Earned: 4 Thanks for the insight Graham - Male, American, Caucasian. Definitely some other "safer" ECs that I could pull from whether it be coaching youth soccer or consulting for a nonprofit outside of work. Overall appreciate the input, was mainly curious if a highly divisive but unique EC like sports betting or sports investing as I look at it would be worth the risk to be a differentiator if the test score isn't raised. Appreciate it! (1)
