Yale School of Management Deepens Its Commitment to Entrepreneurship

The Yale School of Management (SOM) last week announced the launch of a formal Entrepreneurship Program, which will feature expanded course offerings and enhanced recruitment of entrepreneurial faculty and students. It also appointed a new director of entrepreneurial programs and pledged new scholarships and financial support to entrepreneurial students—all as part of a major new commitment to entrepreneurship at the school. Kyle Jensen, PhD, was appointed the inaugural Shanna and Eric Bass ’05 Director of Entrepreneurial Programs and lecturer in entrepreneurship on April 17th. Beginning his official duties on July 1st, Jensen will design and teach entrepreneurship courses, recruit and advise student entrepreneurs, establish programming to complements the work of the Yale Entrepreneurial Institute (YEI) and more. UVA’s Darden School of Business Dean to Return to Faculty at Second Term’s End

Dean Robert Bruner of the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business intends to return to a faculty position when he completes his second term as dean in 2015, the school announced this week. In his almost decade as dean, Bruner is credited with having a transformational impact and helping to significantly propel Darden’s reputation globally. "Darden is recognized worldwide for student satisfaction and for delivering the best graduate business education experience,” UVA President Teresa A. Sullivan said in a statement. “Bob and his team have achieved this reputation through curricular innovations, the launch of two new formats of the Darden MBA, an unrelenting search for top faculty and student talent, and attention to every detail of the academic experience," she continued. Fridays From the Frontline

Hello and welcome to Fridays From the Frontline, Clear Admit's weekly canvassing of the confabulations of the b-school blogosphere. This week, our class of 2016 continues to ruminate on the experience of the past few months, while current students take some time during spring break to update readers on the whirlwind of activity that is the MBA. MBAMyWay has a few new developments to report, as staggered school decisions continue to trickle in. An admit from Ross and waitlist notification from Fuqua gives MBAMyWay an opportunity to reflect on the Coulda-Woulda-Shoulda, but without much regret, since a matriculation at Johnson awaits. In fact, MBAMyWay has even more great news, with a bump off the waitlist and an admit offer to Yale SOM, as well as some great suggestions and ideas as to why the offer came through. While MBAMyWay is clearly decided on pursuing the MBA at Johnson next year, SarahsMBAJourney is using this time to reflect on what she really wants, and is asking herself three important questions about the MBA in order to help determine the answer to that. Deans of Leading Business Schools Descend on the White House

The deans of more than a dozen leading business schools took leave from their campuses yesterday to head to the White House, where they met with senior advisors preparing for the White House Summit on Working Families. The White House is seeking input from a range of stakeholders to identify best practices to develop workplaces that better meet the needs of women and working families. “We did not think this goal could be achieved without thinking of the business leaders of tomorrow, and that is why today, we met with a group of deans from our nation’s leading business schools to discuss best practices for business schools that can better prepare their students for the increasing importance of women in the labor force and the prevalence of employees with families where all parents work,” read a post on the White House Blog. Stanford Tops Forbes Rankings of Most Satisfied MBA Graduates

When it comes to the satisfaction of its MBA alumni, Stanford Graduate School of Business bests all other business schools, according to Forbes most recent biennial ranking. Forbes evaluated responses from 4,600 graduates from the Class of 2008 to arrive at its top 10 list, polling them on salary and ROI, satisfaction with their education and the preparation it gave them and how happy they are in their current job. Stanford ranked in the top five among schools across all three categories in the 2013 Forbes survey. Its grads reported higher salaries than any others, with median total compensation of $221,000 five years out of school. Stanford grads also gave the school top scores when asked about their education and how prepared they felt relative to graduates from other MBA programs. As far as job satisfaction, Stanford ranked fourth. But when Forbes averaged the satisfaction scores across all three categories for the 50 U.S. schools with the most responses to the survey, Stanford came out on top overall. Read more

Conducting a Career Self-Assessment – for New Admits and Current MBAs (Part 3 of 3)

At one point a few years ago, during the height of MBA recruiting season, a senior manager visiting campus for a corporate presentation bemoaned the amount of self-imposed stress that students experience in choosing a full-time employer: “students will spend two years (during business school) agonizing over a job they’re going to keep for less than two years,” he said, and his assessment was not far off. In its 2013 Alumni Perspectives Survey of MBA graduates from 2000 through 2012, the Graduate Management Admissions Council (GMAC) found that “63% of the members of the class of 2010 are still working for the same organization” – or, phrased differently, that 37% had left their first post-MBA job within two years of graduation (and in the midst of a very tough job market). My own anecdotal evidence suggests that at some point roughly 4 to 5 years after graduation, finding yourself employed by the same company you joined coming out of business school becomes the exception rather than the norm. And while there are many variables that influence and reflect MBA employee retention and turnover – GMAC finds, for example, that “switching organizations has a positive impact on salary levels but a negative impact on career momentum” – the simple reality that you should keep in mind as a current or rising MBA is that your next job is almost certainly not your last job, and that part of your task in the MBA career search process is not only to choose an internship and a full-time, post-MBA job, but to begin to plan for and scope out the job after that, and perhaps even beyond. Alumna, Faculty Member Jointly Donate $1 Million for New Tepper School of Business Facility

A Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) alumna and her husband, a current member of the Tepper School of Business faculty, have given a $1 million gift to support construction of a new home for the business school as part of the newly established David A. Tepper Quadrangle, the school announced last week. The gift is from Gunjan Kedia, MSIA ’94, and her husband, Sridhar R. Tayur, a professor of operations management at Tepper. “Our 20-plus years of association with the Tepper School and Carnegie Mellon have been rewarding, both professionally and personally,” the couple said in a joint statement. “We are excited to contribute toward and to be a part of the new Tepper Quadrangle, and we look forward to many more decades of being engaged with the university.” Read more

Clear Admit Experts Weigh in on Helicopter Parents of MBA Applicants

A recent article highlighting the increasing phenomenon of helicopter parents hovering over their adult children as part of the MBA application process shared insight from two of Clear Admit’s own. The article, which appeared in Poets&Quants and Fortune, provided a trove of anecdotal evidence to support the fact that some parents are now playing as involved a role in the MBA admissions process for their children, many of whom are in their mid- to late-20s, as parents of high schoolers applying to college. Stacey Oyler, who came to work as an admissions consultant for Clear Admit after serving on the admissions team at Dartmouth's Tuck School of Business, shared several of her experiences with overly involved parents as part of the article. In one instance, Oyler received a late-night call from an accusatory mother who questioned Oyler’s advice regarding her son’s application. Read more

IE Business School and EY Launch New Business Research Organization

Spain’s IE Business School has partnered with EY (formerly Ernst and Young) España to launch the Global Corporation Center (GCC), a new research center devoted to examining the challenges facing 21st century business organizations as a result of globalization. A formal presentation announcing the center’s launch took place on April 8th. In addition to serving as a platform for debate and analysis, the GCC will host workshops and publish research reports on a range of topics and key markets. Giuseppe Tringali, CEO of Mediaset España, will serve as president of the center. Other members of the GCC’s Presidential Committee will include Juan Costa, EY sustainability and climate change chief, IE President Diego del Alcázar, and IE Vice Dean Francisco Navarro. Navarro will also serve as the new center’s executive director. Read more

Conducting a Career Self-Assessment – for New Admits and Current MBAs (Part 2 of 3)

Last week’s discussion of self-assessment took us to the start of business school, and assumed that the newly-matriculated student has performed a deep-dive on the “highs” and “lows” of each past educational and professional experience, and has gained new insights via the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and the CareerLeader MBA career assessment. An equally important aspect of MBA career self-assessment involves focusing on the Present – assessing all of the variables that relate to: the MBA program you’re enrolled in, your comparative advantage and competitiveness within the context of your peer group (the first-year student body at your own school, primarily, but also including MBA candidates at other programs), and the MBA recruiting climate and macroeconomic conditions for the industries and opportunities you are likely to pursue. Conducting a self-assessment with respect to the ‘present’ time frame of the business school experience itself is less dependent on understanding one’s individual predilections and aspirations, and more reliant on mapping that self-knowledge onto a competitive landscape, and on creating a strategy about how to allocate one’s time and energy for maximum effect given that context. New Partnership Will Help Yale School of Management Students Focus on Sustainability

The Yale School of Management (SOM) has forged a new partnership with the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies (F&ES) and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) that will give students an opportunity to work together with global business leaders to address critical sustainability issues, the school announced yesterday. The new partnership will connect Yale students and faculty with business leaders from across the WBCSD network, with the aim being to inspire new management practices that better address today’s business challenges as they relate to sustainability, according to an article yesterday in the Yale News. The partnership will focus its efforts on the 25-school Global Network for Advanced Management, which was established by SOM Dean Edward Snyder in 2012. Read more

Berkeley’s Haas School Hosts 15th Annual Global Social Venture Competition

The Haas School of Business at the University of California at Berkeley will welcome 18 entrepreneurial teams from around the world this week, there to compete for $55,000 in prizes as part of the Global Social Venture Competition (GSVC). The GSVC global finals, taking place April 9th through 11th, will showcase a range of innovative business ideas designed to generate positive social impact. This year’s teams are presenting concepts ranging from celebrity-sponsored nonprofit fundraising to salinity sensors for small-plot shrimp. Read more

UNC Kenan-Flagler School of Business Teaches the Languages of Global Business

Do you know about the Working Languages program at UNC Kenan-Flagler School of Business? It’s a series of courses designed to help business students develop communication skills in foreign languages that will allow them to thrive in today’s increasingly international business environment. So far, nearly 400 students have taken part, the school reports. Working Language courses are offered to both undergraduate business and MBA students through the Global Business Center (GBC), with partial support from a CIBER grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Currently, Spanish, Portuguese and Mandarin classes are available. Much of it involved giddy celebration, and skillful procrastination. Another across-the-pond blogger, Sara'sMBAJourney, continued to share impressions of her trip to the States, including her enjoyable visit to Duke, as well as the terrible state of American roads and the terrible drivers on them. Choosy MBA Students at Top Schools Reject Job Offers, Hold Out for Dream Jobs

Some students at top MBA programs are rejecting employment offers and choosing to graduate without a job in hand, holding out for positions at technology firms and startups, which hire later than more traditional finance and consulting companies, according to a Wall Street Journal report yesterday. “I'm not nervous,” Ellen Cory, a second-year student at Dartmouth's Tuck School of Business who has turned down several job offers, told the Journal. "I'm not behind for the type of position I'm trying to get. I've seen classmates get a lot of great jobs. And I have confidence that I will be able to find a job that satisfies me," she said. Conducting a Career Self-Assessment – for New MBA Admits (Part 1 of 3)

MBAs are often told that a new job search should begin with a process of introspection known as “self-assessment,” yet that advice is not always accompanied by a prescriptive guide for what that process should entail … the words themselves are deemed sufficiently self-explanatory. At the same time, a good career self-assessment is not rocket science. It involves focusing on three time periods – past, present, and future – and it can benefit from use of a small handful of exercises and instruments, the most prevalent (and useful) of which are the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), whose intellectual antecedent is the philosophy of Carl Jung, and the CareerLeader assessment, developed by Drs. Tim Butler and Jim Waldroop at Harvard Business School. For a rising MBA, the need to conduct a critical self-assessment is acute because the cost of having to reverse course or of simply “getting it wrong” – for example, by chasing after “your roommate’s dream job” rather than your own, or by discovering that your dream career path lies in private wealth management one week after deadlines for private wealth management internships have passed – is high. Columbia Business School Students to Volunteer as Part of Inaugural Day of Impact

Hundreds of MBA students, faculty and staff at Columbia Business School (CBS) will fan out into the communities surrounding the school this Friday for an inaugural student-led volunteering initiative called Day of Impact. As part of the day-long event, members of the CBS community will give back to their larger community by beautifying city parks, delivering meals to home-ridden residents, preparing food for a food bank, caring for animals in need and more. “Making an impact on society — however large or small — is a huge part of who we are at Columbia Business School,” Sheila Lalani ’14, vice president of community service for the school’s Graduate Business Association, said in a statement. “The idea behind Day of Impact is to demonstrate our community’s commitment to not only bettering the business world once we graduate, but also working to improve the community in which we live.” Read more

NYU Stern School of Business Appoints Alumnus as New Dean of MBA Students

Conor Grennan, an alumnus of New York University’s Stern School of Business, will become the school’s dean of students for the MBA program effective tomorrow, the school announced today. In his new role, Grennan will serve as a liaison between the Stern’s administration and its more than 2,500 full-time and Langone MBA students. Before attending Stern’s full-time MBA program, Grennan founded non-governmental organization (NGO) Next Generation Nepal, which has rescued approximately 500 trafficked children in post-war Nepal and reconnected them with their families. While at Stern, he wrote Little Princes: One Man's Promise to Bring Home the Lost Children of Nepal, a New York Times best-selling book chronicling motivations for and experiences with his NGO. Grennan earned his MBA from Stern in 2010 and served as president of the student body during his second year there. Read more

UC Berkeley Draws Record Number of Entrants to Startup Competition

More than 200 teams from UC Berkeley and UCSF have entered this year’s startup competition, including 18-Haas affiliated teams, competing for $60,000 in prizes. The contest, previously known as Bplan, sports a new name this year, LAUNCH, which is intended to reflect the continued move away from long-form business plans to the one-page business model canvas and 10-slide presentation used by today’s startups. “We thought about what this competition is really trying to do: It’s now much more about catapulting and launching companies from ideas to viable businesses over the course of the competition,” says Moses Lo, MBA ’15, one of the co-chairs of the competition. “LAUNCH exactly describes our aim.” Read more

Although the season ends with an offer to join the Ross weekend MBA program, Ellie is taking advantage of this time to do some self-reflection and prepare for next year's challenges.
