Chicago Booth MBA Admissions Interview Questions: Round 2 / Adcom / On-Campus
Overview: Conversational interview with an Admissions Fellow on campus. The interview ran about 40 minutes though we had actually scheduled a full hour. INSEAD to Celebrate Women with a Month Full of Events
To mark Women’s History Month, INSEAD has filled March with a string of events celebrating women and showcasing their achievements on its campuses in Europe, Asia, the Middle East and beyond. INSEAD’s first women’s event is a speaker session entitled, “Women @ Work.” The event will take place later this week, on Thursday, March 3rd on INSEAD’s Asia campus in Singapore. Claudia Zeisberger, academic director of INSEAD’s Global Private Equity Initiative (GPEI) and an affiliate professor of decision sciences and entrepreneurship and family enterprise, will lead the discussion examining women’s journey in the workplace from the sideline to center field. Harvard MBA Admissions Interview Questions: Round 2 / Adcom / On-Campus
I had my HBS interview with Adcom members on campus last week. It felt super conversational, and they were smiling and laughing throughout with me, which was nice but unexpected. Hopefully they thought it went well too. They asked a number of questions about my career choices. We talked a lot about my work in equity research and what I enjoy about it, how I got there, my background, etc. They had specific questions about the retail industry that I cover and asked me to pitch them a company, which I did. Emory / Goizuetta MBA Admissions Interview Questions: Round 2 / Adcom / On-Campus
I interviewed with the Director of Admissions. The interview went really well. In fact, I thought the questions they asked may have been the best of any school I have visited so far. Harvard Business School Class Visits Spots Available Now Through Early May
Harvard Business School (HBS) tweeted today that registration is now open for class visit spots from March through early May. Sign up to reserve your chance to observe the school’s signature case method in action. Because the case method is so central to its MBA program, HBS encourages those interested in applying to visit campus and sit in on a class if possible. (Note, though, that a visit to campus is not required and does not impact admissions decisions.) Highbridge Capital Management Co-Founder Joins Columbia Business School Board of Overseers
Columbia Business School (CBS) welcomed a new member to its Board of Overseers this week: alumnus Henry Swieca (MBA ’83), co-founder of Highbridge Capital and founder of Talpion Fund Management. Swieca joins more than 100 alumni and prominent business leaders who, as part of the board, provide support and strategic counsel to help the school continue to deliver top-tier management education. Led by co-chairs Henry Kravis, MBA ’69, and Arthur Samberg, MBA ’67, the Board of Overseers is charged with drawing on its collective experience to ensure that the school’s programs are well connected to key industries. Fridays from the Frontline
    Hello and welcome to Fridays from the Frontline, Clear Admit's weekly accounting of the adventures of the b-school blogosphere. News continues to trickle in for this year's round of applicants, while also able to take some time to reflect on the application experience thus far, as well as what lies ahead. Over at BootsToSuits, hammO discusses the dichotomy of, on the one hand, having so much free time now that the application process and decision are over, and on the other, not having much to write about once that onerous process is complete.  However, there is still plenty to do in preparation for matriculating at Johnson.  FromGMATtoMBA has less sanguine reflections, as another ding from Booth came on an ill-timed Valentine's Day.  MBAReapplicant reflects on a less-than-successful R1 process, but takes solace in the fact that moving on to Round 2 gave the opportunity to apply to equally great schools.  R2 has brought some good news already, with interviews at Tepper and Anderson, for which MBAReapplicant gave a nice shoutout to the Clear Admit Interview Reports  Read more

$10 Million Alumni Gift to Further Transformation of CMU’s Tepper School of Business
An acclaimed venture capitalist and alumnus of Carnegie Mellon University (CMU)’s Tepper School of Business, together with his wife, has given $10 million to further efforts already underway to enhance the school’s undergraduate and graduate programs in business, the school announced today. James R. Swartz, a 1966 graduate from the business school, is a noted entrepreneur and venture capitalist and founding partner of Palo Alto‒based Accel Partners. The gift, which he made with his wife, Susan, follows a $67 million gift in November from the charitable foundation of David A. Tepper to create a major new academic hub at the center of CMU’s campus called the Tepper Quadrangle. Read more

UCLA Anderson School of Management’s Approach to Diversity Recruiting in MBA Admissions
The recruitment of African-American students and other traditionally underrepresented minorities is a challenge facing admissions directors at leading MBA programs, according to a recent post on the UCLA Anderson School of Management Blog. “This is an issue facing all of the best programs,” says Alex Lawrence, Anderson assistant dean of admissions. “All of the admissions directors talk about it; it’s reality.” The relatively low admission numbers of black students in Anderson’s full-time school is a problem that stems from the fact that there are only a limited number of candidates that qualify for the top schools, he says. Yale Entrepreneurial Institute Innovation Fund Awards First $100,000
A fund launched by Yale University last fall has awarded its first $100,000 to a start-up launched by Yale School of Management (SOM) students with a unique product for treating acid reflux. The Yale Entrepreneurship Institute (YEI) Innovation Fund was launched in September 2013 by Yale University, Connecticut Innovations and First Niagara Bank to provide early-stage funds to promising start-ups coming out of YEI. Startup firm Eli Nutrition, Inc., maker of a new antacid called Tummyzen, snagged the first $100,000 investment, the school announced this week. Read more

UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business to Host Business of Healthcare Conference
Students at the Haas School of Business at the University of California at Berkeley are busy this week preparing for their 8th annual Business of Healthcare Conference, which will take place on February 28th. New Online Course at Stanford Teaches How to Think Like an Entrepreneur
Stanford University’s newest online course examines the best practices of Silicon Valley entrepreneurs and venture capitalists while allowing participants to try out their own start-up ideas. Called “Cultivating the Entrepreneurial Mindset,” the course is open to entrepreneurs and aspiring entrepreneurs anywhere in the world and features lectures, videos and exercises covering the transfer of technology ideas to market, how to develop a business model, how to develop talent and capital resources and more. UNC Kenan-Flagler to Co-Host Inaugural Clean Tech Summit
The Center for Sustainable Enterprise (CSE) at the University of North Carolina (UNC)’s Kenan-Flagler Business School will co-host an inaugural Clean Tech Summit next week, where the focus will be on how to support clean technology growth in North Carolina’s Research Triangle. The event, co-hosted by the UNC Institute for the Environment in partnership with the Research Triangle Cleantech Cluster and Strata Solar, will take place on Wednesday, February 26th. Specifically, it will examine ways for the Research Triangle to take a global leadership position in the clean tech filed, through the use of smart grid technology, efficient water management, efficient multimodal transportation, environmentally sustainable waste disposal technologies and more. Opportunities to Learn about Oxford’s Saïd Business School, Both on Campus and Abroad
Oxford University’s Saïd Business School is gearing up for a number of events on its campus, in cities around the globe and via webinar to introduce prospective applicants to the school and its MBA programs. Catch MBA Program Director Stephan Chambers in Toronto or Los Angeles, take part in Oxford MBA Open Day later this month or take advantage of a series of webinars directed toward prospective applicants in different parts of the world. Tomorrow, February 20th, Stephan Chambers will speak to prospective applicants in Toronto, Canada, providing an overview of Saïd’s MBA program and the benefits of studying at Oxford. Virtual Tour Provides Up-Close View of UVA’s Darden School of Business
Considering an MBA program at the University of Virginia’s Darden School but unable to visit? A new virtual tour on the school’s website provides a 360-degree view of the school and its campus that will leave you feeling like you just got back from Charlottesville. The tour includes some of the most recognized spots on campus, including the stately Saunders Hall and its PepsiCo Forum, where First Coffee—a tradition dating back to the school’s founding—takes place every morning. But it also features more informal spaces as well, such as Café 67, where students can grab a quick breakfast, lunch or snack, and Flagler Court, a spacious outdoor gathering area between the faculty and classroom buildings. MIT Sloan Women in Management Conference Features First-Ever Pitch Contest
The 2014 MIT Sloan Women in Management (SWIM) Conference included its first-ever pitch contest for MIT women entrepreneurs. As part of the challenge, held last week during the annual SWIM conference, 10 startups presented a range of innovative ideas so compelling that the panel of judges ended up selecting two winners rather than one for the $1,000 prize. One of the winners was Caroline Mauldin, a first-year student in MIT Sloan’s dual-degree program with Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. Her company, Love Grain, creates food products made with the Ethiopian grain teff to serve the growing gluten-free market. Its first product, a pancake and waffle mix, is already being sold, and a second product, an energy bar, is in development. Read more

Tuck School of Business Students Wait Longer to Accept Jobs, Employment Data Shows
Tuck School of Business Class of 2013 graduates waited longer to accept job offers than graduates in recent years, a trend that suggests the economy’s gradual improvement has allowed them to be more discerning in their job searches, according to Jonathan Masland, director of Tuck’s Career Development Office. This came as part of a recent report by campus newspaper The Dartmouth on employment data released by the school earlier this month. According to the report, compensation rates and employment levels for the Class of 2013 were generally in line with figures from recent years. Read more

Harvard Business School, Fuqua School of Business Researchers Examine Modern Matchmaking
Researchers at Harvard Business School (HBS) and Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business recently set out to examine what motivates people to act as matchmakers, discovering that they do it because it brings intrinsic happiness. HBS Associate Professor Michael Norton and Lalin Anik, a postdoctoral fellow at Fuqua, will present the findings of four studies tomorrow at the Society for Personality and Social Psychology annual conference in Austin, Texas. As part of their studies, Norton and Anik used surveys, computer games and lab-based social interactions to show when and why making matches increases happiness. Read more

Yale SOM MBA Admissions Interview Questions: Round 2 / Second-year student / On-Campus
The ADCOM prepared a full day of activities, including class visit and lunch with first year students. The atmosphere was friendly; it was clear that the interviewer was in my shoes 2 years ago. He had an A4 sheet of paper with some questions and a couple of rows to write below each question.
