Chicago’s McGowan Charitable Fund Announces 7th Class of Fellows

Since 2010, the William G. McGowan Charitable Fund has been naming 10 outstanding second-year MBA students as members of its annual class of McGowan Fellows. The fund was created and named in honor of William G. McGowan, an American business leader and founder of MCI Communications, following his passing in 1992. The selected fellows join a prestigious group of alumni from some of the best business schools around the United States. One fellow is chosen annually from each of 10 partner business schools. Tops for Tech: The Best Business Schools for Careers in Technology

Here’s a fact you may not have known: Several of today’s leading technology innovators share one thing in common—a Montessori education. Yep, Google’s Larry Page and Sergei Brin, Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales, and SimCity creator Will Wright were all educated as children using the self-directed, hands-on, collaborative teaching model developed by Italian doctor and educator Maria Montessori. Alas, though, not a single one has an MBA—so perhaps not a very useful factoid when you’re trying to determine the best business schools for a career in technology. Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg, Microsoft’s Bill Gates, Apple’s Steve Jobs, Michael Dell, Biz Stone of Twitter—none of them has an MBA either. And Facebook second-in-command Sheryl Sandberg, who does have an MBA from Harvard Business School, is famously on record recently saying the degree isn’t necessary for success in tech. New Forté “Rising Star” Pilot Program Preps Undergrad Women for Business

Undergraduate women on 10 U.S. campuses can now participate in a fun, free online program designed to help them prepare and compete for top jobs in business-related fields. The new “Rising Star” pilot initiative, announced yesterday by the Forté Foundation, is designed to encourage young women of all majors to start exploring career options early to better position them for jobs in business fields immediately upon graduation. By extension, the new program could also help position women to apply to competitive MBA programs after acquiring requisite work experience. Schools participating in the “Rising Star” program include Carnegie Mellon University, Cornell University, George Washington University, Indiana University, New York University, Ohio State University, the University of Michigan, the University of Texas at Austin, William & Mary and Yale University. Forté handpicked the participating schools, most of which are in the consortium’s business school membership already, with the goal of including a diversity of schools ranging from large public institutions to small private colleges. “We went to familiar campuses where we have a strong support network for this pilot year, with the intention of expanding as soon as the pilot year is over,” says Forté Executive Director Elissa Sangster. The Inside Scoop on the Forté Forums: Great Networking for Prospective Female MBA Applicants

From Atlanta to Seattle and back, Forté Forums have been taking place around the country, giving prospective female MBA applicants a terrific opportunity to connect with admissions staff from dozens of leading business schools, hear from current students and alumnae and meet fellow applicants. The Forté Forums are an annual event series put on by the Forté Foundation, a consortium of leading companies and business schools committed to helping launch women into fulfilling careers in business. Taking place in 10 U.S. cities as well as Toronto and London, these free events kicked off on August 17th and will culminate with a final event in October. To truly understand what prospective female MBA applicants can hope to gain from attending a forum, we dropped in on one ourselves late last month in Boston. The cluster of professionally dressed young women in the lobby of the Liberty Mutual Building on St. James Avenue provided a preview of what we would discover upstairs. CMU’s Tepper School Appoints New MBA Program Head

The Tepper School of Business at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) recently appointed a new head of its MBA program, the school announced last week. Kathryn (Kate) Barraclough comes to Tepper from the Owen Graduate School of Management at Vanderbilt University, where she served as director of the school’s Masters in Finance program while also teaching a range of finance courses. “Kate Barraclough brings an impressive and broad background, ranging from academia to financial services,” Tepper School Dean Robert Dammon said in a statement announcing her appointment. “Her achievements as a scholar, researcher and educational leader were fundamental qualities that led to her appointment.” Read more

CMU / Tepper MBA Admissions Interview Report: Round 1 / Adcom / Skype

The following interview report was submitted by a Round 1 applicant to the Tepper MBA program. To give a background, I had applied to 5 schools - Booth, Ross, Tepper, Anderson and Stern. I was dinged without an interview from Booth and Ross but did get interview calls from the rest. Booth and Ross were the first couple of schools, that I had applied to - So I guess you do get better in the application process. I distinctly remember Tepper's application, as it was one of the lengthiest. There were 6 essays in all including the short-term / long term goals and the re-applicant essay. I was ecstatic at having received an interview invite within a couple of days of submitting the application. I chose to interview over Skype as Tepper does provide you an option to do that. $31 Million Alumni Gift to Establish New Entrepreneurship Center at CMU

Good news for the entrepreneurial applicant considering the Tepper School of Business at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU): A generous alumni gift will establish a new hub for entrepreneurial activities across the university, the school announced yesterday. Alumnus James R. Swartz (MSIA’66), founding partner of global venture capital firm Accel Partners, has given $31 million to the school, which will create the Swartz Center for Entrepreneurship. University of Illinois College of Business Launches New $20,000 MOOC-Based MBA

The University of Illinois College of Business this week announced the launch of an online-only MBA degree program designed to democratize access to graduate management education, according to U. of I. College of Business Dean Larry DeBrock. Called the iMBA, it will be the first complete online graduate business degree offered in partnership with Silicon Valley educational technology company Coursera, which offers courses from many other leading MBA programs through its platform of massive open online courses (MOOCs). The College of Business is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, and development of this new program was designed to mark the occasion, according to DeBrock. “We’re entering the online MBA field motivated in part to find new ways to return to the tradition of great public universities making an elite education available to all,” he said in a statement. Tepper School of Business MBAs, IEEE Seek Standards to Support Evolving Robotics Industry

With robotic applications promising breakthroughs in fields ranging from healthcare and energy to defense and agriculture, MBA students at Carnegie Mellon University’s Tepper School of Business are working with experts to analyze and identify standards, best practices and ways to share knowledge that could help advance the robotics industry. CMU’s Tepper School of Business Celebrates Global Entrepreneurship Week 2014

It’s been a busy week at the Tepper School of Business and Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) overall, where students have been partaking in a global celebration of innovation and entrepreneurship. Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) 2014 began on November 17th and will continue through November 23rd. Observed in 140 countries worldwide, GEW was launched in 2008 to inspire “people everywhere through local, national and global activities designed to help them take the next step in their entrepreneurial journey.” At Tepper and CMU, the week has included a series of campus-wide events designed to showcase and support the school’s thriving entrepreneurial spirit. Proceedings have included everything from fireside chats and open office hours with venture capitalists to an elevator pitch competition and a startup job fair. Throughout the week, CMU campus experts in new business creation, along with stakeholders in venture capital and community development, have delivered lectures and workshops for aspiring innovators and entrepreneurs. Stanford Tops Forbes Rankings of Most Satisfied MBA Graduates

When it comes to the satisfaction of its MBA alumni, Stanford Graduate School of Business bests all other business schools, according to Forbes most recent biennial ranking. Forbes evaluated responses from 4,600 graduates from the Class of 2008 to arrive at its top 10 list, polling them on salary and ROI, satisfaction with their education and the preparation it gave them and how happy they are in their current job. Stanford ranked in the top five among schools across all three categories in the 2013 Forbes survey. Its grads reported higher salaries than any others, with median total compensation of $221,000 five years out of school. Stanford grads also gave the school top scores when asked about their education and how prepared they felt relative to graduates from other MBA programs. As far as job satisfaction, Stanford ranked fourth. But when Forbes averaged the satisfaction scores across all three categories for the 50 U.S. schools with the most responses to the survey, Stanford came out on top overall. Read more

Alumna, Faculty Member Jointly Donate $1 Million for New Tepper School of Business Facility

A Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) alumna and her husband, a current member of the Tepper School of Business faculty, have given a $1 million gift to support construction of a new home for the business school as part of the newly established David A. Tepper Quadrangle, the school announced last week. The gift is from Gunjan Kedia, MSIA ’94, and her husband, Sridhar R. Tayur, a professor of operations management at Tepper. “Our 20-plus years of association with the Tepper School and Carnegie Mellon have been rewarding, both professionally and personally,” the couple said in a joint statement. “We are excited to contribute toward and to be a part of the new Tepper Quadrangle, and we look forward to many more decades of being engaged with the university.” Read more

$10 Million Alumni Gift to Further Transformation of CMU’s Tepper School of Business

An acclaimed venture capitalist and alumnus of Carnegie Mellon University (CMU)’s Tepper School of Business, together with his wife, has given $10 million to further efforts already underway to enhance the school’s undergraduate and graduate programs in business, the school announced today. James R. Swartz, a 1966 graduate from the business school, is a noted entrepreneur and venture capitalist and founding partner of Palo Alto‒based Accel Partners. The gift, which he made with his wife, Susan, follows a $67 million gift in November from the charitable foundation of David A. Tepper to create a major new academic hub at the center of CMU’s campus called the Tepper Quadrangle. Read more
