Fridays From the Frontline – News from the B-School Blogosphere

Hello and welcome to Fridays From the Frontline, Clear Admit's weekly roundup of the ruminations of the b-school blogosphere. Zubin Davar '15 is a second year Anderson student, who is sharing his experience as a summer intern at Google. Despite his first day nerves, Zubin is relying on key takeaways from his first year. Some Business Schools Adopt Tracking Software in a Bid to Increase Yield

A number of top-tier business schools have begun to use software to track prospective applicants’ interactions with their school in an effort to gauge how interested they are in attending, according to a recent article in Bloomberg BusinessWeek. The data points – which can include whether a student has emailed admissions staff, how many admissions events they’ve attended and whether they requested program information – are now included in candidate profiles alongside test scores and essay responses, Bloomberg BW adds. Most schools report that student interest isn’t a main factor in admissions decisions, but the fact that increasing numbers of schools are using the tracking programs suggest that the data gathered counts for something. Hello and welcome to Fridays from the Frontline, Clear Admit’s weekly confabulation with correspondents in the b-school blogosphere. Our 2016 applicants continue to receive status updates from schools, while current students are taking the opportunity afforded by spring break to travel and update their blogs. Domotron finally heard from Kellogg, with news of a ding that confirmed a Class of 2017 matriculation at Tuck. CoffeeBeansandTeaLeaves also received a ding from Kellogg, and updates readers with a final tally of dings from this year's application season. Although the season ends with an offer to join the Ross weekend MBA program, Ellie is taking advantage of this time to do some self-reflection and prepare for next year's challenges. Harvard, Stanford, Wharton Tie for First in U.S. News Business School Rankings

U.S. News & World Report released its annual rankings of the best graduate schools, and a familiar cast of characters topped the list of top business schools, though with a few minor shifts. The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania sashayed up from third place up to tie for first with Harvard Business School and Stanford Graduate School of Business. The University of Chicago Booth School of Business gained some ground as well, moving up from the No. 6 spot last year to No. 4 this year. Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management, meanwhile, dipped – sliding into the No. 6 spot vacated by Chicago Booth. MIT’s Sloan School of Management, which tied with Kellogg for fourth last year, also slipped, falling to fifth place. Read more

Kellogg School of Management Extends Round 2 Deadline Due to Cold Temps

Extremely cold temperatures have forced the Kellogg School of Management Office of Admissions to remain closed until tomorrow – and spurred the school to extend its Round 2 deadline by two days, from today to Thursday, January 9th,,at 5 p.m. CST. According to a message on the Kellogg website, the Round 2 deadline for all applications has been extended until January 9th, and both on-campus and off-campus interview requests will also be accepted until this date. The dangerously cold weather has caused Kellogg to remain closed yesterday and today, and Round 2 applicants have been sent an email today letting them know about the extended deadline, Poets&Quants reported. McKinsey Outpaces All Other Employers in Hiring MBAs from Kellogg, Chicago Booth

Consulting firm McKinsey & Co. hired more 2013 MBA graduates from both Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management and the University of Chicago's Booth School of Business than any other employer, Crain’s Chicago Business reports. Forty-six of Kellogg’s 750 graduates headed to post-MBA jobs at McKinsey, and 41 of Booth’s 579 graduates did the same, Crain’s reported, citing annual employment records from the schools. McKinsey has been the largest employer of Booth graduates for five years running. Kellogg can almost make the same claim, except that Boston Consulting Group hired three more graduates than McKinsey in 2010. Read more

UMichigan’s Ross School of Business Leads in Building LGBT-Inclusive Campus Culture

The Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan has gotten more of its student body involved to help foster an LGBT-inclusive campus culture than any other top business school, according to initial standings released last week for the MBA Ally Challenge. The year-long competition, launched by nonprofit Friendfactor, is part of the organization’s larger effort to encourage straight people to become visible and active allies in their workplace and campus communities. Twelve of Bloomberg BusinessWeek’s top-20-ranked MBA programs have taken on the MBA Ally Challenge, and together they have activated more than 1,800 students since this year’s challenge kicked off in late August.
