In the wake of an American presidential election that has left a country divided and the rest of the world looking on with reactions ranging from surprise to disbelief, issues of racism, sexism, nativism and homophobia have erupted at the surface of national discourse. President-elect Donald Trump ran on a campaign that included promises to ban Muslims from entering the country, build a wall between the United States and Mexico and deport millions of undocumented immigrants. Trump’s own comments, endorsements from outspoken individuals with ties to racist organizations and pledges to nullify executive orders issued by President Barack Obama have caused millions to question his commitment to protecting the rights of women, minorities and members of the LGBTQ community. Chicago Booth Remains Atop Economist Ranking Amid Drastic Fluctuations by Other Schools

Chicago’s McGowan Charitable Fund Announces 7th Class of Fellows

Since 2010, the William G. McGowan Charitable Fund has been naming 10 outstanding second-year MBA students as members of its annual class of McGowan Fellows. The fund was created and named in honor of William G. McGowan, an American business leader and founder of MCI Communications, following his passing in 1992. The selected fellows join a prestigious group of alumni from some of the best business schools around the United States. One fellow is chosen annually from each of 10 partner business schools. Students can take multiple paths with an MBA from Dartmouth’s Tuck School of Business, but they can also combine the degree in creative and powerful ways thanks to a range of joint- and dual-degree programs that draw on the strengths of Dartmouth’s other postgraduate schools. This array of opportunities gives students at Tuck even more refined ways to direct their burgeoning careers. Stress Around Standardized Tests, Tuition Costs Looms Large for Current MBA Applicants

Entrance exams generate more angst than any other part of the MBA admissions process for the majority of applicants to business schools, according to a survey released today by the Association of Independent Graduate Admissions Consultants (AIGAC). Sixty-one percent of respondents cited standardized tests as the most challenging application component, while 46 percent pointed to written essays and 20 percent indicated interviews. Interestingly, newer additions to the application process—such as videos and group exercises implemented in recent years by schools like Kellogg and Wharton—seem to incite less anxiety, with only 19 percent of applicants saying these were especially challenging. Consortium Alumna’s Parents Establish $1 Million Endowment in Daughter’s Memory

It takes a special family to turn tragedy into hope and opportunity for others, but that’s exactly the kind of family Leslie Elise Adkins had. Adkins, an MBA student at the University of Southern California’s Marshall School of Business and a fellow of the Consortium for Graduate Study in Management, died on May 5, 2015, due to complications from chronic diabetes. Push-Up Throw Down Sweeps Business Schools, Raising Awareness of Veteran Suicide

Veteran organizations at leading business schools are getting in on the latest challenge to sweep the internet—this time to raise awareness of the incidence of suicide among veterans. The #22PushupChallenge is so named to reflect statistics that suggest that 22 veterans, on average, commit suicide each day. Untreated or inadequately treated mental health issues such as post-traumatic stress (PTS) and traumatic brain injury (TBI) are often to blame. Christopher Molaro, co-director of alumni relations for the Wharton Veterans Club at the University of Pennsylvania and formerly a captain in the U.S. Army, acknowledges that some have questioned the accuracy of this number. “The 22 number is not substantiated and is debated, but the cause is less about the specific number, 22, and more about building momentum to change the perception of mental health,” he says. “Whether it’s 22 or one per day, it needs to be addressed.” Read more

The good news is that these elite institutions are hiring more MBAs than ever, despite ongoing job cuts and restructuring across the investment bank industry. In 2014, the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) revealed that 26 percent of MBAs landed a job in finance/accounting—more than any other industry.
