Professors Talk About the Holiday Toy Battle Sans Toys “R” Us

What’s a Christmas without Toys "R" Us? How are all those parents and kids going to find their perfect toy? While this year might mark the first Christmas season without Toys "R" Us, there’s no need to panic. Many stores and outlets have already rushed to fill in the gap left by the toy store’s bankruptcy filing. Amazon sent out holiday toy catalogs to millions of customers, and Walmart and Target also have plenty of toys to fill in the gap for families. Most surprising, Toys "R" Us itself isn’t entirely out of the running, yet. In October, the brand decided not to liquidate all of its assets and instead has partnered with Kroger to create pop-up stores inside the supermarket called, “Geoffrey’s Toy Box.” To figure out what all this means, Wharton School marketing professor Barbara Kahn got together with Mark A. Using Social Media to Help Your B-School Application: Advice from Admissions Directors

If you’re an MBA candidate, you should know that there’s more to an MBA application than the forms you fill out and the essays you write. In this age of social media, what you post online can have repercussions in the admissions process and on your future career. Admissions offices at leading business schools know that most applicants maintain an online presence and will sometimes check to see what they’re posting. Wharton Talks Marketing Lessons Learned from Payless Publicity Stunt

What would you do and what would you think if you paid hundreds of dollars for shoes that sell for less than $20? That’s the dilemma that faced a select group of social media influencers who were invited to a private launch party for Italian shoe designer Bruno Palessi. What they found out later was that the hundreds of dollars they thought they spent on fancy footwear was just a ruse by Payless ShoeSource. It was all part of a marketing ploy by Payless to highlight their new shoes and inexpensive designs. The question that’s on everyone’s minds now is, “Did the stunt work?” According to Wharton marketing professor Barbara Kahn and Lehigh University assistant marketing professor Ludovica Cesareo, it was an elaborate ploy that paid off big time. One of INSEAD’s major selling points is its language policy, which requires that students speak English fluently and moderately well in a second language. Northwestern Kellogg 2018 Employment Report Reveals Increasing Interest in Tech and the West Coast

Last week, Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management released its 2018 Employment Report revealing a record number of graduates going into the tech industry (28 percent) and more companies hiring Kellogg talent than ever before. Other highlights include a growing number of graduates headed to the West Coast for jobs (around one-third) and a steady employment rate with 94.6 percent of students receiving a job offer three months post-graduation—a slight increase from 94.1 percent last year. Kellogg Job Offers and Salaries Remain Stable Over the last two years, Northwestern Kellogg has witnessed strong and steady base salaries and job offers with little to no change. Although the number of MBA graduates heading into consulting decreased slightly this year (down to 30.1 percent from 32.9 percent), the median salary was $147,000 for both years. The technology industry had similar results though interest increased year-over-year (24.9 percent in 2017 compared to 28.3 percent in 2018). Median base salaries in technology stayed consistent with just a slight increase from $125,000 in 2017 to $130,000 in 2018. Read more
