In case you missed the brouhaha that went along with the most recent U.S. News & World Report’s ranking of business schools, NYU Stern School of Business failed to get in all of the requested data on time and suffered a mighty consequence: plummeting from 11th to 20th. Haas Joins Global Network for Advanced Management, Connecting Students Across Continents

Goizueta Launches Study Of Global Accelerators

The Social Enterprise @ Goizueta program at Emory University’s Goizueta Business School has partnered with the Aspen Network of Development Entrepreneurs (ANDE) to launch a study of global accelerators. Called the Global Accelerator Learning Initiative (GALI), it aims to perform a comprehensive analysis and market assessment of business accelerators. USC’s Marshall School of Business Debuts Online MBA Program

Beginning this fall, the Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern California will roll out a new online MBA program, featuring a curriculum designed specifically for the online learning environment, the school announced today. The new program will take a close look at emerging business topics of particular relevance to online business, such as internet analytics, social media, virtual teams and entrepreneurial thinking. The cost of tuition is slated at $93,502. The curriculum for the new program was developed specifically for online delivery – this is not just a regurgitation of traditional in-classroom content slapped up online, the school notes. As such, it will incorporate live action cases, interactive exercises and virtual teams. Read more

UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School Joins Reaching Out LGBT MBA Fellowship Program, Names First Fellow

Yesterday, Reaching Out, a nonprofit devoted to empowering LGBT MBA students to champion equality in business school and beyond, announced that the University of North Carolina’s Kenan-Flagler Business School has become the latest school to join its fellowship program. Kenan-Flagler becomes the 15th MBA program to join as a founding school of the Reaching Out LGBT MBA Fellowship, which provides scholarship funds and networking and other opportunities to LGBTQ MBA students and their allies. “Not only that, but Kenan-Flagler has already awarded its first Fellowship!” wrote Reaching Out excitedly on its blog. London Business School Announces Four £30,000 Scholarships for Female MBAs

London Business School has partnered with Lloyds Banking Group for a second year to offer four £30,000 scholarships to female MBA students, the school announced this month. The scholarships are part of the school's continuing effort to encourage women to pursue post-graduate management education. The Lloyds Scholarships for Women program launched in 2014. Through it, scholarships will be awarded to MBA candidates who have been accepted into LBS’s full-time program for its 2015 intake. They are available to female candidates who have lived in the United Kingdom for three years or more. Read more

Round 2 Decision Day at UPenn’s Wharton School, Harvard, Stanford

The fate of many hopeful MBA applicants hangs in the balance, with the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School scheduled to release Round 2 decisions today and Harvard Business School (HBS) and Stanford Graduate School of Business (GSB) scheduled to release Round 2 decisions tomorrow. We know from the Clear Admit LiveWire that lots of applicants have already gotten the good word from Wharton and Stanford via phone today, so a hearty congrats to those of you who fall into this category! Don’t expect early calls from HBS, says Admissions Director Dee Leopold. “While we love to give happy news, we don't want to create an anxiety zone where you are watching your phone constantly,” she wrote in a post to her Director’s Blog today. All notifications from HBS will go out via email at 12 noon Boston time tomorrow. “We know you've been out-of-control throughout much of this process - we can give you the control of where you are and with whom when decisions go out,” Leopold added. Applicants to UMichigan’s Ross School of Business Begin to Receive Admissions Decisions

Some of those anxiously awaiting word from the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business began to receive phone calls yesterday letting them know they’d been accepted, which we saw reflected on the Clear Admit LiveWire. Ross Admissions Director Soojin Kwon confirmed in a post to her Admissions Director Blog that she and her team were set to begin calling U.S. applicants yesterday and will make international calls today. “All decisions will be posted online at 12 p.m. EST on Friday, March 13th,” she wrote. Kwon didn’t share updates sooner, she says, because her team was making final decisions right up until the last minute in a year when choosing who to admit proved particularly tough. “Not only did we receive more apps, the quality of the apps was higher all around,” she wrote. “I’m not just talking GMAT scores, but also the experiences and skills that applicants have. It was extremely hard to not admit more than we did.” Read more

UCLA Anderson School of Management Releases Early Batch of Round 2 Decisions

At the start of the week, UCLA Anderson School of Management released an early batch of Round 2 decisions. We saw it reflected in the Clear Admit LiveWire, with multiple reports of acceptances by phone through the week. Anderson’s MBA Insider’s Blog confirmed in in post as well, stating on Monday that the school would release a batch of early Round 2 decisions that night and that admit calls would follow throughout the day. Congrats to the applicants who received acceptances, either by phone or with an official decision letter by email on Tuesday. If you applied to Anderson and have not yet heard, don’t despair. “We are still in the thick of evaluating Round 2 applications,” wrote Associate Director of Admissions Jessica Chung on the MBA Insider Blog. “As mentioned in my post in January the vast majority of interview invitations were sent through the end of February, but we are continuing to send some invitations out this month, though the volume will be very light,” she added. HEC Paris Launches First-of-Its-Find Fundraiser to Support Entrepreneurship

HEC Paris is more than halfway to its goal of raising €150,000 in 50 days to help further an entrepreneurial boom underway at the school. The HEC Foundation launched the school’s first-ever fundraising campaign focused entirely on entrepreneurship earlier this year. Today, 23 days into the campaign, 61 donors have pledged a combined €80,427, putting the school well on track to meet its goal. Interest in entrepreneurship at HEC Paris has soared over the past decade, with entrepreneurial-focused students representing 25 percent of the class today, up from only 4 percent in 2004, the school reports. The HEC Foundation’s recent fundraiser was launched to support the growing entrepreneurship goals of HEC students. “Our goal is to make the Entrepreneurship Centre a showcase of the commitment to openness and diversity of HEC, to increase the rate of student success in creating their business, and to facilitate integration of technological resources of the Saclay cluster into student projects,” the school said in a statement. U.S. Business Schools Feel They Prepare Students Better Than European, Asian Counterparts, Kaplan Survey Finds

U.S. business schools believe their MBA graduates emerge better prepared for today’s business world than do graduates of their European and Asian counterparts, according to a recent survey by Kaplan Test Prep. No real shocker, right? But somewhat more surprising is the prevalence of that view. In Kaplan’s survey of more than 200 top U.S. business schools, a whopping 95 percent believe that American business schools better prepare their students than European business schools do. As compared to business schools in Asia, 92 percent of U.S. schools were confident their students were better prepared, this even amid the growing prominence of Asian MBA programs. Survey respondents also expressed overwhelming confidence that MBA graduates from U.S. schools are properly prepared amid the rise of a tech-focused economy, with 95 percent of respondents saying so. Business leaders are not entirely in agreement, Kaplan notes, citing a Gallup study last year showing a third of business leaders disagreeing with the statement that “higher education institutions in this country are graduating students with the skills and competencies that my business needs.” Read more

USC Marshall School of Business Student Investment Fund Receives $3 Million Donation

A New York‒based investment management firm has donated $3 million to establish a new student investment fund and educational travel scholarship at the USC Marshall School of Business, the school reported recently. The gift, from Van Eck Global, is designed to help encourage Marshall students to pursue careers in the investment community, says the firm’s director and president, Jan van Eck. Marshall’s Center for Investment Studies (CIS) will administer the new fund and scholarship. The fund, which will be named the Van Eck Global Student Allocation Fund, will be seeded with $2 million of the gift. Unlike many other student investment program that focus on security selection, the Van Eck fund will give Marshall students an opportunity to explore asset allocation methods. Van Eck Global is a leading manager of Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs), a growing market that offers investors a wide range of equity and fixed income alternatives. Read more

White House Officials Head to Haas School of Business for Insight on Responsible Business

The Center for Responsible Business (CRB) at the University of California at Berkeley’s Haas School of Business will co-host a meeting later this week where White House officials will seek input on how to promote responsible business conduct by U.S. companies. The event, co-hosted by Haas’s CRB and the U.S. Network of the United Nations Global Compact, will take place this Friday, February 6th, at the Berkeley-Haas Innovation Lab (i-Lab). The meeting is one in a series of such events White House administration officials have been holding to draw insights from academics, companies, labor unions and non-governmental organizations on how to hold U.S. businesses and their partners accountable internationally to protect the environment and human rights. The findings will contribute to the U.S. National Action Plan (NAP) on Responsible Business Conduct Abroad, created by President Obama last September. Read more

GMAC Unveils New Tool to Give GMAT Test Takers Greater Control over Exam

The Graduate Management Admissions Council (GMAC), which owns and administers the GMAT, has launched a new tool designed to help GMAT test takers better understand their performance on the exam’s different sections and better equip them to improve their scores going forward. GMAC solicited feedback from both test takers and test prep organizations to develop its new GMAT Enhanced Score Report (ESR), which provides comprehensive post-exam diagnostics, including performance measures for each section of the exam, to help test takers understand their strengths and weaknesses and gain insight into how best to improve their scores. Key features of the ESR include overall section performance ranking, performance ranking by question type, time management ranking, percentage of questions answered correctly, average response time, and a customized summary report for each section assessing strengths and weaknesses. Harvard Business School Reins Supreme in Financial Times Global MBA Rankings

For the third consecutive year and the sixth since the rankings debuted in 1999, Harvard Business School (HBS) appears at the top of the Financial Times Global MBA annual rankings, released yesterday. London Business School continued its upward climb, ascending into the number two spot from number three last year. The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania moved up a spot as well, to third. Stanford Graduate School of Business, meanwhile, fell from the number two spot last year to share fourth this year with INSEAD. The FT compiles its annual global MBA rankings based on two surveys of the business schools and their alumni. (For this year rankings, alumni who graduated in 2011 were surveyed.) Based on the responses to these surveys, the MBA programs are ranked according to the career progression of their alumni, the school’s idea generation and the diversity of students and faculty. Kaplan Survey Finds Most MBA Programs Don’t Plan to Cut Essays Despite Trend Among Elite Schools

Many leading business schools have been slashing the number of essays they require applicants to write in recent years, but a recent survey of schools across the United States reveals that it’s a trend confined mainly to only the most competitive MBA programs. Kaplan Test Prep earlier this week reported that only 13 percent of the 204 business schools that participated in its 2014 business school admissions officers’ survey had cut the number of admissions essays for this most recent admissions cycle as compared to 2013. Furthermore, only 3 percent reported plans to cut essays for the next admissions cycle. “While it’s true that some of the most competitive business schools have cut the number of admissions essays or reduced the word count, our survey finds that the overwhelming number of MBA programs continue to see value in applicants submitting more information about themselves,” Brian Carlidge, Kaplan Test Prep executive director of pre-business and pre-graduate programs, said in a statement. “From what we’ve seen, the business schools that have cut their number of admissions essays are doing so to streamline the process, believing they can get what they need from applicants through fewer, more focused essays,” he continued. UMichigan’s Ross School of Business to Launch new Leadership Center with $20 Million Gift

The Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor will soon be home to an innovative new center devoted to developing leaders capable of driving real change and tackling some of the greatest challenges facing the world today, the school announced today. The Sanger Leadership Center has been made possible thanks to a generous $20 million gift to Ross from former General Mills CEO Stephen W. Sanger and his wife, Karen. Ross already has its very successful Ross Leadership Initiative, and the new center will incorporate and expand on many of its current activities. They include an annual Impact Challenge and Crisis Challenge, Legacy Lab, Story Lab, skills-based workshops, and a variety of learning communities. Ross also features the Leaders Academy, which affords students opportunities to create, launch and lead actual businesses. In addition to maintaining and expanding this programming, the new Sanger Leadership Center will also serve as a resource for Ross students, providing personalized feedback, coaching and development. Harvard Business School Admissions Director Shares Round 2 Interview Invitations Info

To all those who submitted Round 2 applications to Harvard Business School (HBS) earlier this week, congratulations! We hope you’ve taken a deep breath and done a little something to celebrate the culmination of what we know was likely a lot of hard work. You can rest assured that your application is now in the hands of the HBS admissions team, led by Managing Director of MBA Admissions and Financial Aid Dee Leopold. “The Round 2 application deadline went smoothly and we are now in hibernation-mode and happily reading,” Leopold wrote in a post today to her Admissions Director blog. She devoted the remainder of her post to sharing details about the next big step in the application process, the interview. Interviews will begin on February 12th and continue through early March, Leopold wrote. Tuck School of Business Professor Releases Annual Picks for Best and Worst CEOs

‘Tis the season to reflect on the year’s best and worst CEOs. Tuck School of Business Professor of Management Sydney Finkelstein has been making a list and checking it twice since 2010, sharing with the public his picks for which CEOs have excelled in the prior year and which have tanked. This year’s losers include the CEOs of Twitter, Sears Holding, Tesco, American Apparel and Banco Espírito Santo. Twitter CEO Dick Costolo is not helping the company fulfill its potential, Finkelstein says, noting that shares have dropped by 42 percent and monthly active users have slowed. Sears Holdings CEO Eddie Lampert made the list for the second year running, for what Finkelstein deemed failed strategy, arrogant leadership and Sears’ rapidly dropping stock price. Read more
