I love the close communities at Tuck and Fuqua but ultimately decided Wharton was the right decision long-term. I highly encourage other Vets who are applying to utilize mentorship through "Service to School". Given your non-profit/social impact career goals, the full ride at Stern is quite compelling since you won't have the burden of repaying student loans. In addition, both schools would provide great opportunities to network for non-profit/social impact jobs in the NYC area. I do encourage you to visit both campuses and talk with current students who are pursuing a non-profit career path. Best of luck. (2)

Do you have a preference between PT and FT? Will the part time program take longer to complete? The benefit of attending a full time program is that you will complete your degree in 2 years and have a summer internship opportunity in which to work at a firm. This summer job option can be helpful for career switchers. I suggest that you do your due diligence on the Booth PT program to learn more about their career placement for consulting and tech. (1)

anon10646 Likes Earned: 837 Did you interview at any of the others? Do you anticipate any major profile changes by early rounds next cycle (new work achievements / room for another 10-20+ on GMAT?). Were applications rushed at all / do you think you can improve essays much on redo of apps? At 3YOE you have room to delay, but if worth delaying may depend on answers to the above. As 17117 notes, Darden would achieve consulting results, so it depends if you think you can get much better $ or additional admits in next cycle that would be worth delaying a post-MBA path and salary jump. Citing economic uncertainty and student visa worries would be easy enough to cite as reasons to delay without burning bridge with Darden if you want to reapply. (2)

grichmond Verified User. Likes Earned: 1420 While the job market is challenging, I’d think that you’d be able to find something across consulting or tech - if recruiting for both AND willing to look beyond MBB/Amazon/Google - which it seems you are.

Of course, there is always the visa issue, so it would be good to know what citizenship you hold (Taiwanese?)…

The benefit of Stern, as you point out, is the STEM OPT visa for initially working in the USA, but you are right that the costs will be higher in NYC…and the TechMBA is more specialized/siloed.

INSEAD will offer a more international network and a better footprint in Europe and SE Asia…so perhaps less risk if you can return to Taiwan for work afterwards….Plus, it’s not solely tech focused.

I do tend to think that attending one of the two options may be your best bet at this point, and that you’d regret missing the opportunity if you walk away.

1) Tech placement: Among Class of 2024 graduates accepting jobs: 24% of Haas grads accepted tech industry jobs compared to 20% of Kellogg grads.

2) Location placement: Among Class of 2024 graduates accepting jobs, 78% of Haas grads accepted jobs on the West Coast and only 1.2% accepted jobs in the Southwest (Texas). In comparison, 26% of Kellogg grads accepted jobs on the West Coast and 6% accepted jobs in the Southwest. Also keep in mind that Kellogg places 36% in the Midwest (Chicago).

3) Scholarship differential: Haas is offering you $60k more scholarship than Kellogg is. Note: I do suggest that you estimate your total costs (tuition/room/board) since cost of living may be higher in Berkeley than in Evanston.

In summary, both Haas and Kellogg would provide you with good access to Big Tech job placement on the West Coast and both schools send relatively few graduates to roles in the Southwest.

My view is that if you are willing to start off your post MBA tech career on the West Coast, then either Haas or Kellogg would allow you to achieve this. You could then seek to transition your tech career from the West Coast back to Texas.

Thus, your decision likely comes down to your personal fit (Haas vs Kellogg), geographic preference (Berkeley or Evanston) and the value of the scholarship difference ($60k). To help you decide, I encourage you to visit both campuses and chat with current students. Best of luck.

Having said this, I think that Yale SOM has an edge over Darden given your career goals. First, Yale SOM publishes VC job placement in their career reports while Darden does not. For example, in the Class of 2024, Yale SOM placed 3 graduates into VC jobs and 4 into PE jobs. Second, Yale SOM has strong ties to the gov't/civic/non profit sector which would give you good connections as you focus on investing in the govtech space. Third, if you want to work in NYC, Yale has deep ties and close proximity to the NYC finance community.
