Notes:

Super pumped to be accepted to two great programs. Assuming I'm WL/dinged at UCLA/Yale. Interested in entering the entertainment industry post-MBA: love Stern's global opportunities + specializations, but USC has a larger % placement at entertainment companies. Any advice is appreciated! Also received no scholarship, sadly. (can I negotiate this?)

anon17670 Likes Earned: 318 Congratulations on your admissions to Stern and Marshall. They are both solid programs. Marshall has a stronger network and also program skewed to Entertainment than Stern. Also the advantage also comes with the location to access recruiters Cal. It is possible to negotiate for scholarship if you can share strong merit reasons why you should be considered for a merit scholarship. It is worth trying. Best of luck. (2)

anon10646 Likes Earned: 783 Congrats. Cannot speak too extensively on media & entertainment, but I did go to USC was an undergrad. USC Marshall has expanded quite a lot with new buildings in the southeastern patch of campus, so facilities are quite updated. I understand NYU has it's own renowned film school, but the USC Cinematic Arts school got a massive new building courtesy of one George Lucus on north side of campus about 10 years ago. It may have slightly more entertainment business bent than the NYU Arts. One potential connected 'entertainment' area in the LA area is there are a lot of video game makers and other tech that is more entertainment minded. Both also have extensive sports entertainment. I wouldn't consider LA as cosmopolitan global as NYC, but LA/USA has quite a strong Pacific Rim connection. Talk to some NYU entertainment alumni for their views and consider what type of location you could see yourself living FT. Trojan network much stronger in CA. (2)

anon64468 Likes Earned: 65 as someone in media based in NY who tried to get into the film industry after undergrad, get as close to LA as you can. there's something to be said for Stern's ties with Tisch, but on-campus recruiting at any school struggles with connecting with media companies and LA people like to hire other LA people who can start right away. Any companies with NY offices (HBO, A24, networks, news channels, post production) have LA-based offices as well. get to california!! (1)

Given your desire to enter the entertainment industry post MBA, you can't go wrong with either option. Question - when you mention the entertainment industry, do you want to end up on LA, NY or a different location? If you want to end up in the entertainment industry in LA, I would give a slight edge to USC given its deep connections to the LA based entertainment industry. Best of luck with your decision! (2)

I should've been more clear: I'm interested in the music industry as opposed to the film industry. I also have an interest in social impact which I would like to explore a bit, but am pretty set on entering the entertainment industry. I'm open to living on either coast long-term. Ideally, I'd want to work in both cities! I'm currently schedule to speak to a few alumni from both schools, but truly appreciate everyone's advice. I feel very torn. (2)

anon10646 Likes Earned: 783 Still nothing deep to add on music entertainment. Same thing I said about video game makers. RIOT games is basically a record studio that makes games so some of the local makers likely have similar opps. I believe Dr Dre and Jimmie Iovine created a 'creative lab' at USC few years back. Social stuff is fairly easy at USC because the neighborhoods once you start to get 5-8 blocks E/W/S of USC are disadvantage areas. USC, partly out of self-interest of safety, has done a lot for the surrounding neighborhoods; running local schools etc. A plus for USC in past 10 years or so is the light rail has expanded, so you can live downtown and take it to campus with a stop just off the bschool section. And it's like 75-85 and sunny most of the year. (2)

anon17062 Likes Earned: 103 Op again: not going to lie, when I posted this I was leaning towards NYU, but now I'm completely torn. I would love to work for Disney or Warner Media, so LA may be the place to be. Ah! Decisions, decisions. Very lucky to be in a situation where I'm torn between two great schools I love. (2)

anon17062 Likes Earned: 103 @anon10646: I visited USC about 10 years ago - so it's been awhile. NYU I've visited recently - very different feels to both schools, but both great. I'm excited to speak with alum and current students. Part of me hopes one of the schools will offer a scholarship so the decision will be made for me! (doesn't look likely).
