Chicago Booth MBA Admissions Interview Questions: off campus / alumnus / round 1

My GSB interview was a standard Q&A type interview for which I felt quite well prepared. My interview was with a recent alumnus and we agreed to meet at his place of business, the offices of a large management consultancy in Central London on a Saturday evening. The interview was delayed by twenty minutes because the receptionists weren’t able to locate him to tell him I was waiting. Fortunately I had his cellphone number and was able to notify him of my presence myself. He was a very friendly Irish guy, and when we finally met, we spent the first few minutes talking about Ireland (my mother is Irish and I spent a lot of time there as a child).

We then moved on to the questions, and it was clear that he was primarily following the list of questions on GSB’s interview feedback form. It was the usual staples; why MBA, why now, why Chicago GSB, what other schools are you applying to, tell me a time when you led people, what do you do in your spare time (it turns out that he runs as well and did the Chicago marathon when he was there), how would your potential classmates and your current colleagues describe you, what makes you unique, and how would you contribute to the school? He pressed me on some of my answers to the questions, though not overly, and I generally got a pretty good vibe. The interview was a very positive experience, and seemed even better in hindsight knowing that I was offered admission by the adcom on January 11.
