grichmond Verified User. Likes Earned: 1310 Sorry to see this news. Even with your non-traditional background, I must admit I am surprised to see these results given those off-the-charts numbers.

The reason I say that is because admissions readers usually root very hard for candidates who are first-gen and forge their own path forward despite extenuating circumstances.

Of course, perhaps the work experience didn't add up in some way, or perhaps your overall application strategy needs a rethink? Did you work with anyone to review your file or offer feedback?

It might be smart to get a current MBA student to look over what you submitted to just give you a gut check. Also, for the school that WL'ed you, perhaps they will provide some feedback?

mmolvart Likes Earned: 7 Yes, I worked with a professional consultant who, like me, is surprised by the outcome. I also had current MBA students review my essays and incorporated their feedback. In terms of work experience, I have ~5 years in tech, with the last two years in a director-level role. Since my post-MBA goal remains focused on technology, I don't see the problem there. (0)

grichmond Verified User. Likes Earned: 1310 Puzzling indeed. Are you over the age of 30? Has your tech work experience been highly technical? Sales oriented? Or does "director level" mean you are leading a team and managing projects/products?

I can see how the adcom would need to get their heads around the unorthodox nature of your path to college, but given your numbers, and the fact that it sounds pretty inspiring, something doesn't seem to be adding up.

Recommendation letters were strong? ECs solid?

mmolvart Likes Earned: 7 Just under 30. I manage projects and work for a smaller firm with a few tens of millions in revenue. I have solid recommendations from both my direct supervisor and one of the owners. I would consider my extracurricular activities a cornerstone of my application, as they reflect multi-year commitments to my community. I also took the time to attend events, connect with current students, and visit all but one of the institutions. I even drove 12 hours to tour Tuck. (0)
